“just okay b&b in expensive Yangon”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

This was the first place we stayed in Birma, so first impression is imporant.
Well, the location was not so good, the rooms where bakpacker minimal style, and so was the terrible breakast with the sweet limonade instead of fresh juice..
The staff was friendly.and gave may usefull information and did the important reservation for hotel in Nyaun oo.and the Motherland was full of many young backpackers.
Bathroom was clean and ac worked.
The breakfast room was hot and sticky, with not so nice tables and chairs.
I would recommend for a really nice pizza in Yangon Papa's pizza.

If travelling solo this would be a great place to meet fellow travellers on arrival in Myanmar, it's such a friendly place, the staff are great and will help with anything. We arrived early after a long sleepless night bus from Inle Lake and although we couldn't check in straight away we were able to have breakfast with no additional cost.

Breakfast here was one of the best we had during our 3 week trip, a choice of eggs (boiled, scrambled, omelette or fried), toast, fruit, cake, tea, coffee and squash on tap. They even have toasters on each breakfast table so you can cremate your bread to your liking. If you order ahead too you can have a Myanmar breakfast.

We had a room on the 3rd floor, which when heavy lorries went past made the beds and walls shake - they might want to look in to the structural safety of the building in a few years but still it adds to it's charm.

Leaving the next day we took advantage of the free shuttle bus to the airport at 6.30am and again there was breakfast before we left - although they forgot about our boiled eggs so we went eggless that morning.

All in all a great place to stay, if located in a slightly off the beaten track location the friendliness that surrounds it more than makes up for this.

Mother Land Inn 2 is an interesting place to stay at.
Friendly and hospitable staff in all areas is the highlight of your stay.
Latt Latt, Chan Chan and Su Kyi at Reception are stars and nothing is too much trouble for them.Actually they keep this place together.
Location is not the best but given the price its a reasonable option.
The hard pillows, flooding bathrooms and early morning noise from the kitchen needs to be looked into.

Room Tip: Definitely go for rooms with airconditioning.

Given the expensive prices of Yangon guesthouses/hostels, this isn't a bad option at all, but I'm definitely inclined to try other options next time.

The Good:
- Service was friendly although it was hard to get their attention sometimes. Some staff seemed quite haughty but that might have been me.
- I booked ahead and got the free taxi pick-up which was very very convenient, given that Yangon taxi drivers will be waiting to mob you at the airport.
- I was allowed to use the phone about 6 times for free to call my friend who was a local.

The Bad:
- It's hard not to think that paying USD 27 for a tiny twin room w/o AC, with attached bath, is extortion
- Bathroom is decent in size, but take 2 showers and the drainage won't be able to take it. It didn't get to the point where water flowed into the room, but the flooding in the bathroom got quite bad.
- Location is far from pretty much anywhere you'd want to visit on your first trip to Yangon: eg, Shwedagon (around 3500kyat taxi trip), Bogyoke Market etc.
- Breakfast was incredibly disappointing. Not expecting first-class food, but the scrambled egg I ordered was drenched in oil and was rubbery and the bread very suspicious. Needless to say, I didn't have the appetite to eat much else.
- No free wifi, 1000 kyat/hour slow internet, only 4 stations available. Okay, this is Yangon in 2013, but this is still a downside nonetheless.
- Small sitting area in the lobby when you want to get some writing done.

Others:
- Room is really average. Looked old. Beds were clean though. No complaints about that.

Room Tip: Don't take the room on the highest floor. It's a long, winding road to the rooms and the sta...

i stayed here during water festival. impressed me a lot. the staffs are very nice, helpfull, and friendly. pick up taxi from airport helped me saving money. i met a lot of travelers from around the world at this place. chill out time at night at terrace and restaurant was my favorite. little bit far from downtown but many taxis stand bye that ready for driving guests to many places. expensive for me as backpacker but hotel rate at all around myanmar is not friendly as well. big fan at roof but still hard to got a nap because hot weather.

Decent rooms I guess for burma's ridiculous prices. No wifi. Internet on pc is 1000k ph.

Breakfast was lovely. Always had the flat bread or the rice. Two veggie options, too.

Staff in hotel part were magnificent. Really helpful.

Kitchen staff were not as helpful. We ordered a green salad as the menu stated literally "green salad". It was white cabbage with tomatoes and a few green bean bits. It was drenched in disgusting mayonnaise. We sent it back but the waiter stated we should have said nomayo even though it wasn't on the menu as having anything other than a salad. We ended up having to send it back as it was more hassle than it was worth and took the loss. A green salad is not white cabbage, tomatoes, some green beans and mayo. Kind of soured the kitchen side. It's also overpriced in there.

Overall I'd stay here again for th customer service alone

All the praise and criticism you’ve read about motherland is true. It’s hard to beat, but competitive hostels are worth trying, even if they have sparse reviews.

SERVICE
Like 99% of people you meet in Myanmar, the people working at motherland are hospitable (maybe a bit less so, since they’ve been jaded by the influx of lonely planet tourists). They greet you with a glass of fresh juice, help orient you to the city and explain dos and do not dos of Yangon. The high number of staff explains why there is always someone to help. The free airport shuttle is worth note.

ROOM
As said in past reviews, the rooms are standard. For the most part clean and comfortable but don’t be shocked if you see a few creepy crawlers in the bathroom. The bathrooms have the standard SEA deficiency; shower next to/above the toilet, so everything gets wet, but if you know what to expect, it’s fine. The beds were pretty hard but sufficient. The service is on par with a hotel, but the rooms remind you, you’re in a hostel.

LOCATION
You’ll be taking taxis most places. It’s not an insane walk to Sule Pagoda (center of town), maybe 35 – 40 minutes, but it is uncomfortably humid.

Overall, Motherland is sufficient. It’s clean, cheap and friendly, but trying other places is worth a shot is you’re a bit adventurous. The very standard hostel gets unwarranted praise due to tempered expectations from other reviewers. Yangon is raising the hospitality bar quickly; future travelers should raise expectations.
