“Mixed feelings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2010

I'd stayed at the Coconut Palms previously, at the time the apartments were being built. I was happy with my stay and felt it was good value for money, so I booked to stay there again on this trip, in a room with shared facilities, same as preniously.

I can see a lot has been done since my first visit. The garden has been extended and landscaped, and it is nice to relax in. The rooms have been painted and some new interior decorations added. Last time coathangers were in short supply, but now there are nice wooden ones. The mattress seemed new and was very comfortable. I was satisfied with the room.

However, the refurbishment hasn't extended to the bathrooms, which seem to have got worse. Hot water was erratic. I tried all the showers on the 3rd floor, in search of reliable hot water but none of them supplied it. The best one delivered a couple of minutes of water at a good temperature before suddenly turning really hot. Trying to moderate the temperature with the cold tap, just turned the water freezing cold. They really need to invest in upgrading the plumbing.

I also felt the meals weren't as good value as last time. The fruit platter in the continental breakfast is definitely smaller - it used to be a whole plate of fruit and now the fruit and the toast come on the same plate.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The bedside lamp wasn't working when I arrived and it was replaced immediately, at a speed not often encountered in Vanuatu! I queried a charge on my bill, and the receptionist quickly worked out that there had been a transcription error. She corrected this without any fuss. The restaurant staff remembered my preferences for coffee and to have plenty of water with a meal. They seemed genuinely interested in my activities for the day, and how it had been.

This place has its good points, particularly location, but it is really let down by those bathrooms which impact my value for money rating. I'd give it a qualified recommendation.

we stayed at Coconut Palms twice during our journies around Vanuatu - both visits were very pleasant - stayed in rooms adjacent to the pool - dbl bed and x2 singles - happily accommodated our family of 4. Service was good - you must remember island time in Vanuatu - staff were always pleasant and helpful. The pool was very well cared for and the grounds excellent - which gave the place a luxury feel on a budget - thank you for that! We would stay there again. Close to city and to where ni-Vans are living - so get to see the real world - hospital and jail close by.

My partner and I booked Coconut Palms due to the price we found online as it was the only hotel we found not to be "too budget" and not "too leisure" for the price.

We were in Vanuatu for 2 weeks total but checked out/in of the Coconut Palms 3 times when we returned to Port Vila from our overnight stays in different Islands. Each time was a different experience since we stayed in 3 different types of rooms. Although each experience varied from good to bad.....we kept coming back so that should say something of how much we enjoyed this hotel.

1st room (Hibiscus) (1 double bed) - Simple, clean, on the 3rd floor w/a balcony overlooking the hotel pool. Shared shower and toilet w/1 other room. No closet so your belongings will be on the tile floor. Noise = poolside drinking @ night, neighboring dogs barking in the morning.

2nd room (Clover) (1 double bed & single bed attached on top as bunk bed) - Small, NOT clean, on 2nd floor w/a window looking out to passage way. Noise = foot traffic, laundry room traffic. After we settled in, we discovered that there were small bugs crawling on the top bunk bed (bed bugs?). We immediately notified reception & w/no questions asked were handed a new room key to the same type of room but on the 1st floor. No bug problems there.

3rd room (Superior Orchid) (1 double bed) - clean, air condition, private huge bathroom, tv, refrigerator, coffee bar, on 3rd floor overlooking roof of hotel. We treated ourselves to this room since it was our last night and had returned from staying in rural villages for 1week. Noise = barking dogs in the morning.

PROS: Lovely staff, Great food, Internet (free w/purchase of beverage), bar, great pool, pool table, great price (especially if you are a return customer like us...we were given discounted rates each time we returned)

CONS: neighboring dogs barking, cleaniness of 1 room, washer/dryers are finicky & expensive to use since tokens are needed for each cycle, 15 minute walk into town down steep steps.

Recommendations:
1. From airport - Take a mini-bus (instead of taxi) from domestic terminal. Taxis can cost from 600VT when a mini-bus will only cost 200VT/per person.
2. Walking from hotel into town - Take the short-cut walking down the cement steps. Ask reception.
3. Transportation from hotel into town - Take mini-bus for 150VT/per person. Mini-buses are always driving past.
4. Try the chinese food restaurant located on the same block of hotel (by gas station). We ate there 3 times!
5. Take ear plugs if the barking dogs will bother you.

The staff were wonderful - everyone we came into contact with was helpful friendly & happy The breakfasts were great. Our room was disappointing - we had superior orchid room. The room was cleaned well, however- the toilet seat was PAINTED & peeling badly & the mildew in the shower recess was ingrained & no amount of cleaning could get it out. We looked at other superior orchid rooms on our floor (when we were leaving)& all appeared in good condition. We will definately go back to Coconut Palms but next time will check our room. I would recommend this resort to a friend however I would tell them to check the room before accepting it.

my husband and i stayed here for 8 nights and have never travelled to villa before. We knew that this was one of the cheaper hotels so we were a little weary. However i can not speak more highly about the hotel, We stayed in a superior orchid room, it was very clean, simple but did the job. Apparently for a little more the apartment is double the size. The staff at this hotel really are amazing, thankyou Alice, james and Frank you really are a credit to the hotel. These staff are so welcoming they even took us to the kava hut which is located behind the hotel, this is a must to see how the locals drink!!! The food at the resturant is also good and very well priced. Try the pizza that was our favourite. However the best resturant that we tried was el geckos which is located in the main street of vllla. The ribs here are to dye for and plus they do a all u can eat pasta night on thursday nights for around $18.00.
Thanks again to the hotel staff for making our stay fantastic.
This is an awesome hotel for people on a budget.

My partner and I stayed here for one week, and found it such good value for money. The staff were fantastic and friendly, treated us like family. The outdoor area is beautiful, we spent many hours lazing around by the beautiful pool setting. If staying here, I would recommend upgrading to an orchid room with private bathroom and aircon, I dont think we would have survived without the air con! The rooms are very small, but comfortable. They are between the dorm rooms and their shared bathrooms, so it can get noisy depending on your neighbours. I think we got lucky staying off peak. Probably wouldnt recommend for families with small kids as theres not a lot of room.
The location is great, about a 5-10min walk into town, however in the heat we got lazy and caught the bus everywhere. Would highly recommend for couples on a budget.
