“Wonderful stay at Poppys”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

We stayed 6 nights at Poppys. Lovely place and wonderful staff/facilities. The complex is a nice small family run resort, quiet and discrete. There is a nice mix of units to suit both the family size, view and budget. You can walk into Port Villa in around 15-20 minutes. Nothing is too much bother for the staff who go out of they way to assist you. We stayed in one of the garden view units (#19) looking out at 'guess what' as well as a lovely and very private (no kids) pool. Beautiful unit with nice compact outdoor area with table and chairs which we used to the max!! Unit very clean and tidy, insect-free and serviced daily. Some of the local dogs do like to serenade you at night and we closed the ventilation shutters to minimise this. Very nice continental breakfast. Took advantage of the free kayaks which are very stable and spent a few hours (especially early morning) on the lagoon. There is quite a steep driveway leading from the complex to the road above, however if this is a problem you can requests the buses/taxis to take up up (or down). We ate at different local restuarants (including Poppys) and found these to be fairly reasonable (although slightly higher-priced that N.Z.). Locals are simply marvellous and friendly, with the children especially photogenic (they love doing 'high-5's' and invariably say 'Hi'. Considering the poverty there, it is a wonderful compliment to the locals that they are so friendly and outgoing. Use the local bus (minivans) with number plates beginning with the letter (B) to get around. They will take you anywhere in and around Port Villa for 150V per passenger. They are everywhere, there are no actual stops as we know them, so you only need to hail them, and tell them where you want to go. Quite often they will slow down and ask if you want a ride - you either do or you dont!! The locals don't beg or pressure you to buy (like Bali) and accept "No" with grace. Overall a great experience at a lovely establishment.

Room Tip: All of the accommodation seems ok. For couples wishing a 'kids-free' environment try the ...

We stayed at Poppy's for 7 days during August. We found it to be quite lovely. We had a room downstairs around the pool which was perfectly placed for access to Reception and the lagoon. We had complimentary breakfasts of fruit, lime juice tea or coffee and croissant or toast with jam. The driveway is a little steep and my friend wasn't able to walk up it because of a bung knee but we just asked reception to order us a taxi to come down to the bottom. In the end a bus came so the cost was the same as if we had walked to the top. The staff are lovely and Keith is hilarious, his laugh is quite infectious. We had a massage which was more of a tickle than a massage but was quite relaxing, and I had my hair braided by Marie who did a wonderful job. The dogs from the village are quite loud and bark all night which is annoying but in the end, you are staying on an island which is covered by small villages so there's really no getting away from it. I simply put in earplugs to drown the noise out. The food at Poppy's is simple but nice, especially the kumala soup. Keith organised all of our tours and they were well priced. The manager wasn't particularly friendly towards us but it didn't matter because the locals were. I would stay at Poppy's again if I was going back to Vanuatu - which I hope to one day!

This was our second stay at Poppys, the first visit was 3 years ago. We enjoyed our first visit with in January 2010 very much and were very happy to return for again. The location is great as it is so convenient to walk to town and the staff are very friendly. A special thanks to Albert and Rachel for their extremely efficient and helpful manner of dealing with guests. I would be happy to return again for a third visit to Vanuatu.

Room Tip: In 2010 we travelled with 2 adult children & stayed in the family Bungalow which was perfect for...

we stayed 6 nights at Poppy's and would happily return next time. the location was very good, close to town; 10 minutes walk andthe staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The private beach was good as you could go kayaking in the lagoon or swimming in one of the three swimming pools. the food was very good, fresh and reasonably priced.
.Albert, one of the staff went to great lengths to ensure Michael found a great fishing trip. The staff went out of their way to be accommodating and helpful. We stayed in Lagoon view studio and found it to have everything we needed for our stay including a small kitchenette. The rooms were kept clean and the balcony overlooking the lagoon was excellent. We did not find the room very noisy. The gardens and surrounding eating area were quite beautiful. The little extra details such as fresh flowers around the room and in the dining area added a tropical touch. The vanauatuans were friendly and always smiled and said hello as we strolled the streets surrounding the resort. This resort is also close to L'Houselat Restaurant (excellent) and Mangoes (I think/hope we went on a bad day).

Overall I enjoyed my stay at Poppy's and would recommend it to first time visitors to Vila. The staff were friendly and will happily provide advice and arrange tours for you. The food was good and reasonably priced.

Because Poppy's is on the lagoon you avoid the noise and traffic of Port Vila town centre, but are still within walking distance. If walking back from town be aware that you must walk up a step flight of stairs, not a problem just stop at the Brewery Bar for a beer before heading off, (you might also want to take a small torch if walking at night).

Poppy's variety of accommodation types allows it to cater for different needs. If looking for a romantic getaway you should probably go for a private bungalow and make use of the adult's only pool.

I stayed in a Lagoon view studio, which was up the 'hill'. These rooms are comfortable, well sized and have everything you need if self-catering (if you are self-catering there is also a BBQ for guests to use). These rooms can be noisy. Melanesian Tours is next door which means their airport transfer vehicles are moving in and out in the early morning.

Room Tip: Avoid Lagoon view if unfit, in-firmed or have a toddler

While I agree with some of the comments, overall my family and I had a great time as we accepted the challenges and the good points out way the bad...for us anyway.
The driveway is pretty dreadful however, so are all the roads and footpaths are often non existent.
This is not a rich place which is evident but the people we met were lovely and friendly including the staff at out resort. The smiles make you feel so good.
If you are going on a tour get to breakfast early as there is not much of a system and you do wait. We developed our own, whoever was ready first would go down and order for all, and for us the selection was more than adequate.
We ate there three nights including their Cultural Feast on a Tuesday and it was great. Excellent food and a wonderful explanation of it all. Well worth it.
We were in the three bedroomed apartment and it was perfect for us. You do need to be fit enough to climb the steps up there.
Negatives are that there are not enough deck chairs for the pools. There seemed to be about 6 to 8 for the whole resort and it can be noisy depending where your bedroom is. We were facing to the back of the resort and didn't have any problems but other members of family did.
So glad there was no air conditioning the open slats are wonderful for the evening breeze.

Room Tip: Choose something close to the lagoon if you have trouble sleeping or take ear plugs. I always take e...

My family and I stayed at Poppy's for one week, and we had a wonderful time.

The resort itself is far from perfection, but to us it was a perfect holiday.

Pros of the resort
- lovely staff
- clean rooms
- beautiful setting and location, an easy walk to town
- wonderful Tuesday night spent eating the local food, drinking cava and listening to the band
- the resort Cat Leo is a gorgeous fluffball who curls up on your lap at breakfast time, a fun way to start the day for cat lovers
- canoeing on the lagoon

Poppy's staff member Keith set us up on a day trip around the island, a highlight of our trip as we did everything from swim in the stunning blue lagoon and experience the local Vanuatian village to taking a dip in the piping hot springs in the middle of a restaurant while we listened to the band play waltzing matilda for us.

Cons of the resort
- noisy roosters and dogs surround the resort, this of course is not the fault of Poppy's but does get annoying. I recommend taking earplugs.
- slow service, but who's in a rush on holidays?
- not enough deck chairs for the pool/lagoon area

Thank you to Poppy's for a wonderful holiday, there are some improvements that could be made but overall we had a fabulous time and we love Vanuatu and its people.

Room Tip: Take earplugs and a sleep mask, it will help your sleep quality immensely.
