“Best pick in Vanuatu”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Ok, best to start this by heloping you choose if Hideaway is for your or not. Hideaway is not 4 or 5 star, It does not provide TV, Phone, radio or hairdryer in the rooms, it does not have room service, does not have a swim up bar and a nightclub, its is not a big flashy resort. So, if you are a high maintenance traveller who needs everything, then read no further.

What it is, is a perfect holiday destination. Our bungalow (which was the newest of the bunch, Number 6 if you get to choose) was LOVELY. Very clean and well fitted out, its was an extremely comfortable room for our holiday. You could sit on the deck and have a drink and watch the sun set and just sit and look over the bay about 5 metres away. The snorkelling is great, the pool clean (if not a little small), you can kayak and sail a boat as well as dive. There is a glass bottom boat and snorkelling safarai whcih you can go on every day without cost if you want. The ferry between the becah and the island is 24 hours and is safe and easy to use. Transport from the beach into town or whereevery you want is also avaialble regularly at the beach. The staff great and the surroundings absolutely lovely. The food was very nice, but if you were there for more than a week you might want to eat off the island once or twice as its a set menu of 6-7 things which were all very nicet (especially the coconut curry) but you might not want to double up on the same meals. Breakfast was fresh every day, we just had the continential and as much as I love a cooked breakfast I never felt the need, there was plenty of variety including frsh fruit. Drink prices were very reasonable and the 90 minute happy hour each night made it fairly economical. We took our own snorkelling stuff as we often snorkeled before the dive shop opened and it was great to be in the water by ourselves. Reef shoes are a MUST as the coral is hard on your fee and getting to the water's edge without them can be an interesting process, I would recomend going into Port Villa and buyiong them there as they are half the price that they are here and do the job just fine.

They go to lengths to have different activities at night and we were able to enjoy a movie on the big screen on the beach (it was an awful movies, but a charming experience) with beer or cocktail in hand and popcorn being served, a small thing but really very nice. The melanesian feast was good and plenty of food. We did a night snorkelling trip which was different and exciting.

The staff were very pleasant and friendly and took the time to remember our names which was really nice.

I cannot rate this place highly enough especially if you want/need a quiet getaway. Great for family or just a couple and its a very relaxed environment which works with its natural setting to create a lovely little Hideaway. Its far enough away from port Vila to be quiet (takes about 15 minutes ina Bus and about 300vt pp) yet close enough to make it a simple and safe trip in there to shop or eat.

Duty Free in Port villa was VERY Cheap, a 1.125 lt bottle of Bundaberg Run, $18, same for Absolute Vodka adn Jonny Walker Red label $14 for a litre, so much cheaper then Sydney on you retrun. The Duty free shop closest to the island in Port Villa seemed the best value.

A couple of activity tips, we REALLY enjoyed the Zip Lining. Even if you don't like heights this is a must, face your fear and you will have a ball, its not overly cheap but a great experience and certainly cheaper than doing it here. Its new and run by an expat Aussie and all the gear is new, clean and safe. The Mele cascade waterfalls is a good trip, its about 15-20 minutes walk from the island (or 2000vt for a bus), but don't go the day a cruise ship is in town. The Summit Gardens are a lovely location and they give a supurb view of the area and worth the trip and lunch at the cafe is very nice.

All in all, Hideaway Island was a great choice IF you are going there for the right reasons, we will be back.

Room Tip: If you are getting a Bungalow, ask for no 6 when you book as its the newest and is REALLY nice compa...

This was the first time we took the kids to Vanuatu, and wow what an intro. The snorkelling was the best, and easy for even the less confident swimmer.
My parter rated the eye fillet as the best steak he has had.meals were good and the prices were very reasonable. We had a family bungalow , and it was extremely comfortable, and once again good value. Not luxury , however roomy and an excellent choice away from the busy city.
Very handy to the beach bar at Mele. This on a Friday is an excellent choice for family entertainment. Fire dancers a hit for the ten year old.
Hideaway provides excellent entertainment for the whole family. I found staff extremely warm and helpful. The ladies in the office were able to get our domestic tickets emailed to us, and wen the extra mile
Bungalows cleaned every day.
I think this side of town is the nicest and I do know the kids preferred this experience.
Overall the people are so friendly
Great budget accommodation in the best location in villa for main attractions.
Buses were there all the time, to take you into town. We did a lot of local walking as well, including Mele
Would come back

Room Tip: One bedroom bungalows are the way to go

First time staying at Hideaway and it will not be the last. Our bungalow was spacious and clean with one bedroom and kitchen/lounge with seperate bathroom. Tea, coffee, milk, soap, etc was replaced every day and plenty of it. There was no hairdryer, just a minor matter the sun dried the hair anyway.
Breakfast was sufficient and constantly refilled and if you wanted a hot breakfast you pay for it, fair enough. A la carte menu was great and the food plentiful and tasty. Loved the chicken curry!!
The Melanesian Feast was fabulous and so was the entertainment. The Beach BBQ was just ok, not worth the money. It was fun watching movies on the beach. The staff were lovely, friendly and always willing to help.
From what I could see of the twin share rooms they were not what I would stay in. The bathrooms are not attached to the rooms and quite a few people from the beach would use the facilities even though they weren't supposed to. Ideal for backpackers or cheap stays.
The swimming and snorkeling was the best at high tide but people need to stay off the coral!!! Would like to see staff remind them when people arrive. People off the cruise boats seem to be the worse from our observations. Be prepared for the influx of people when the cruise boats are in. The peace and quiet is shattered!!
If you want luxury don't come here. Hideaway is a basic resort with none of the frills and don't come here expecting any.
In fact stay away and my husband and I can book our stay more easily.

Room Tip: Overlooking the lovely sunsets, which happens most nights

My family of four, boys aged 9 and 12, stayed at Hideaway twice in September. The first time we stayed in the 1 bedroom bungalow which was great. The boys had good beds in the living area and we had a separate bedroom. It was very spacious and had a great deck looking out to sea. It was not fancy but was fine for us. The second time, we stayed in two of the twin share rooms. They were very small and close together and the shared bathroom facilities for the 6 rooms were grotty and unsatisfactory. I would come back to Hideaway as the snorkelling and location is good but would stay in the higher level accomodation. Food was good but the staff were not very friendly. The pool is great and my boys enjoyed playing billiards on the deck.

Room Tip: Unless you are a 20 year old backpacker traveling on the cheap, choose a one bedroom bungalow over t...

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights at the resort after a week in Espiritu. The reviews were quite mixed so we were prepared for the worst...but we had a great time overall thanks to the staff (especially Paulina!!). We originally booked a twin share rooms which was basically a very clean concrete box about 3m x 3m with a shared verandah overlooking the water.....we were happy with that except that we didn't know it was shared outside toilet and shower (I know, we should have researched better)....and only two for 6 rooms !! We would have adapted to this except it was always swimming in urine-smelling water and constantly in use and usually no hot water.

We upgraded for the second and third night to a bungalow.....and it is MAGICAL. I cannot imagine a more perfect tropical accomodation....spacious private bungalow amongst the tropical trees with ur own private beach and coral ocean.......hammock and deck chairs, couches, large beautiful interiors, big bed. We could have stayed there for a month. A white pebble-stone path links the bungalows through the beautiful tall trees to the front of the island where all the facilities are.....restaurant, dive shop, reception with long lovely couches and a pool table, gift shop, ferry wharf and of course the endless line of deck chairs next to the blue water.

The dive shop......amazing setup and the best I've seen as a Dive Instructor of 8 years. Brand new scubapro BCDs, mares regulators, "volo" type white fins and mares wide-vision mask and snorkel. They have diver-propulsion vehicles, a nitrox membrane, underwater digital cameras and a nice big bench for setup. The Divemasters are mostly very friendly and above-all EXTREMELY safe and by-the-book....was so refreshing to see an actual onshore dive-briefing with maps because I see it so rarely. The boat-ride is at most 10 MINUTES and is dead-flat. Drop down, see the mostly-dead coral with thousands of tropical fish and then deco-stop and ascent and go home.....how diving should be !! (except for the dead coral). Thankyou so much to Nedge and Kevin for being so great.

Restaurant food was top-notch but we often saw people waiting over an hour for food, and its expensive (Sydney restaurant prices). The beach and water CANNOT BE BEATEN !! Sand that is raked all day by patient ni-Vanuatu to keep flat, the waters-edge is coral which is great because you avoid sand-covered wet thongs and feet, and there's live coral and fish within a few meters of the shore....just the best. I cannot recommend it enough.

Thankyou so much to the staff for making it so magical for my wife and myself. They even sang a song just for us two on Malenesian night ....thankyou so much to Veronique and the girls!! It was 10/10 and we will be back.

Room Tip: Warning !! Twin-share is shared outdoor toilet backpacker style !! If you cant handle that then Bung...

We stayed at Hideaway Island Resort for the first two nights of our honeymoon.

Whilst the fare was quite pleasant (albeit on the windy side of the island), there was a definite lack of customer service.
When we arrived off the boat no one greeted us. I thought our suitcases would have been a giveaway that we were guests and not day trippers.

The restaurant is virtually impossible around lunchtime. You can't order from your table but instead have to queue along with the hoards of day trippers to order and pay at the counter. We found it was quicker to get on the boat and go across the channel to the beachside cafe for a meal.

I'd strongly urge management to allow table orders and if you can't provide proof (eg your key) that you're staying on the island, then you can head on up to the counter to pay.

The snorkelling was ok, but not quite as good as we thought it would be. The paths and beach are all ground up coral which is a little sharp underfoot so be sure to take wet shoes.

The highlight of our stay was the only staff member who introduced herself to us (and I'm sorry I can no longer recall her name). We asked about local cuisine and she brought a tuluk from her village for us to try. It was delicious!

The hideaway was almost the perfect place to relax for a short time. The fish curry was excellent and the continental breakfast hit the spot. Happy hours made the drinks a reasonable price although you have to ask that the cocktails be properly mixed or they serve something that looks and tastes like a slushy. The room was kept as clean as the sand and coral would allow.
The only negative comments I would make are that the towels in the rooms were too small and there was one hotel size soap in the communal bathroom.

Room Tip: I did not see any rooms other than the Dorms and I had one of those to myself. It would be extremely...
