“Leave your Westernised Sense of Precision on the Mainland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2014

We visited Erakor for a family wedding. I'd been to Vanuatu before so had my expectations on the experience well set. Our family had a great stay but warning to all of you who like the precision of westernised service and timing - vanuatu will not be for you. The best think about Vanuatu and something that Erakor excel in is the friendliness and genuineness of the experience. Smiles and hellos abound on the island and nothing is too much. The island is secluded and intimate however if you do the walk around the island you will see it needs a bit of attention to the odd spot of rubbish. Breakfast is good but can be slow - if you have de-stressed and can see the humour of the chef going MIA during breakfast this is the place for you. Leave your watch at home - it is not necessary and you need to adjust to island time. If you can afford it and want family to be together them book Aqua Blue the house on the island - however it is a bit of a trek compared to the beach huts closer to the the restaurant and reception. To go completely off the grid and reconnect with yourself take a trip to Erakor

We stayed in a Family Loft Villa as a family travelling with two adults and two adult kids.
First thing that impressed us was how friendly the staff were! You come to the island by ferry and are welcomed by a bugle playing, big smiles from the staff and a free mocktail. Great way to start the holiday.

Rooms are clean and nicely but simply decorated, with fresh flowers strewn on the beds upon arrival. The bottom floor of the Family Villa opens out straight onto the ocean, with a beautiful view over the water. Beach is metres from the room. There is a fan on both levels but we did not need this given the mild weather. The bathroom was clean and you are able to enter the shower straight from the beach if you desire, which is a nice touch.

Shutters are not block-out so you may be woken by the sun as it shines in your villa in the mornings (we used sleeping masks). The ocean can also be loud at times but we found this quite pleasant to listen to as we went to bed at night.

As for other aspects of the island - animal lovers will be able to see fish swimming under the jetty and we found a friendly crab outside the room. There are a few mozzies but the flyscreens in the rooms were adequate. You can snorkel in the waters off the island and there are some very nice spots. There are lounges, a kids play set and beach volleyball. The massages looked very appealing but unfortunately were booked out when we got there - so booking ahead is a must.

The ferry runs 24/7 from Erakor to the mainland which is a great feature. You can also hire snorkelling gear and extra towels for free. We were here for a few nights and highly recommend a trip to the Melee Cascades: it's just beautiful there. We went to Hideaway Island but found this a little over-rated considering entrance prices - you realise how spoilt you are by the beautiful views and swimming at Erakor, without all the extra tourists around!

Our only disappointment with our stay at Erakor was the restaurant. Meals were very hit-and-miss. None were terrible, but few stood out - the seafood items seemed to be the better choices. Service was very slow, even when the restaurant was not too busy. Also they serve coconut crab here on the menu - which is an endangered crab which is protected on most parts of the island. Please dont eat this! They will tell you that there is no problem eating this here but one crab takes 15 years to grow full size... there is plenty of other seafood to enjoy on your trip here.

Overall a highly enjoyable stay, definitely recommend. If we were to go again, we would probably make use of the ferry more to eat on the main island.

We are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids (12 and 9) and we stayed a week at Erakor for my husband's 50th birthday. Unfortunately my husband had the flu which he had before we left home, and he felt pretty awful for the whole time, but all 4 of us still rated this as one of the best holidays we have ever had.
We have travelled as a family to Fiji, Vanuatu (this was our third trip), Samoa and Thailand as well as a fair bit in Australia. For us this resort ticked all the boxes.
We don't like big resorts, and would much rather have a more genuine experience with friendly staff than have all the bells and whistles of a big chain hotel.
Our bungalow was amazing, with fabulous views over the lagoon. We stayed in a family loft bungalow. Due to my husband not feeling well we ate every meal at the resort, in fact we really didnt leave the resort, and worked our way pretty much through the entire menu which was all fabulous and reasonable prices for Vanuatu. The waiter never tired of me asking a million questions about the menu and Chef was very accommodating in changing things around to suit my fussy kids.
Snorkelling off the beach was good, the further out into the lagoon you go the better it gets. The lagoon is so calm and safe there was no problem at all with our kids swimming way out from shore. All water sports are free which is fantastic so we did lots of kyaking and upright paddle boarding. Every afternoon we played volleyball with the staff, even Chef joined in!
What really makes this resort special though is the staff. The staff are always smiling and willing to help, you only need to wander about looking lost and someone will ask if you need anything. Everyone is very quick to laugh and they all seem to really enjoy their jobs. I don't want to mention anyone by name because I don't want to leave anyone out, but I can honestly say as a family we have never been so sad to leave anywhere before.
The resort was full while we stayed but we never got the feeling of being crowded, we spent alot of time wondering where everyone was as it seemed we had the place almost to ourselves.
We have a family rule to never go back to the same place twice, but we have all agreed in this case we may need to make an exception. My girls have announced they want a new rule....that we never go anywhere else but back to Erakor.

We stayed for 6 nights and were very impressed with how secluded and natural the island is, it really feels like you're a castaway on a deserted islands especially if you book the villas at the other end of the island where there are also secluded and isolated beaches you can enjoy all by yourself. All the staff including Blanca, Donald to name a few from the shuttle boat driver, the restaurant staff and housekeeping were exceptionally friendly with always a smile.

Lazing around and relaxing was our goal and the resort didn't disappoint, we had bicycles to ride around the island, kayaks to paddle around the island and doughnuts to just float around. The reef around the island is not the most impressive but still enjoyable to swim around. All in all, a great resort with great service. Only disappointment is the daily buffet breakfast is rather simple.

The room was a spa villa and was spacious and comfortable. However it is important to note that the villas are not air conditioned, only ceiling fans and expect to encounter the local wildlife like a family of lizards who decided to make a house visit on a few nights. The resort is a 10-15 ride away to the main town via the local taxis.

Room Tip: Some villas are on the remote side of the island where you will be provided with a bicycle.

We just stayed 11 nights there so experienced a deluxe spa villa in full. Overall it was lovely and relaxing. We had coral, sea stars, clown fish, etc 10m from our front door so went snorkeling every day - it was beautiful and amazing. Some pointers I wish I had known earlier:
- Not all deluxe spa villas are the same. Villas 8 & 9 are bigger and with outdoor shower and corridor while villas 10 and 11 are further away from the main area (quieter) and do not share any walls with other villas (again, quieter) but are smaller.
- The form you sign on the airplane to enter Vanuatu has a tear-off section which gets you 2-for-1 beers at one of the Erakor Resort bars, best grab a few immigration forms each!
- The menu gets a bit boring after the first week, so mix it up by going to Warrick's La Lagoon, which is a free 2-min boat ride from Erakor. It has buffets each night for about AUD$40 (Tuesday night is Melanesian night), which is cheaper than the AUD$70-75 Erakor Melanesian night each Thursday. Fire twirling displays at either are amazing, so even skip the meal and sneakily join the dinner party later to watch the display.

We visited Erakor in July 2014. It's not a 5 star resort and we did not expected anything extra. But Erakor and it's staff surprised us a lot. There was no sun when we arrived... but no need, smiles of people in blue shirts (read staff) let us forget about grey sky (well they smile with addition of sun and blue sky make this place extraordinary). We were welcomed with delicious drink and very quickly escorted to our family loft villa. Nice house, clean and fresh smell of flowers made this welcome even better. The view from villa 4 was wonderful as well. This place become our home for 10 nights and we wanted more after that. Despite the fact that we did have an extra 7 nights booked in 5 star resort after Erakor, we did not wanted to move!!! We have been treated like family here. Food at the restaurant was so good that we only went out dinning on one occasion... but that one night could not beat the art of Erakor's Chef specials!!! This island is a very worm and welcoming place, thx to great management and wonderful staff. We would like to thank them all for making our holidays extra special. We do travel a lot and we can say that places, where they make you feel like family are very difficult to find - We found place like this here at Erakor!!!

Room Tip: Try to wash you feet before going under shower, pipes will not block and there will be not reason to...

My husband and I stayed in a spa chalet at this resort in Vanuatu in August 2011 for a 10 day vacation. It was fantastic, and we would return in a heartbeat! (I am a bit delayed with submitting this review - ignore the "Sept 2013" date as it was the earliest I could choose on the Trip Advisor form).

The setting and island is beautiful, the staff friendly, the chalets were shabby chic (rustic yet very comfortable and had everything you could need) - we particularly loved the open air shutters (no glass windows) which meant you could hear the water lapping the rocks in the lagoon when you were in bed which lulled us to sleep.

Other bonuses include: free ferry to the main island for trips to the supermarket, local marker, exploring the island etc, free wi-fi in the reception area, free use of beach equipment - snorkels, see-through plastic bottomed kayaks to paddle around the island/lagoon etc. Great selection of excursions that could be booked through the resort.

There were lots of families there with young children - it is a very safe and family friendly resort, on its own exclusive use island, with shallow lagoon waters on the beach for a good way out which meant safe swimming/paddling/snorkelling (splashing kids could very safely be supervised from the sun loungers) - we would love to return one day with our young family.
