“Escape from Erakor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

We booked 5 nights at Erakor and arrived on a Friday afternoon. Unfortunately the weather during our stay was not very good. The room was Superior Waterfront Spa Villa. No 10. The villa interior was itself very nice, and the daily cleaning service excellent. However not a lot of room to enjoy the place in wet weather (separate bedroom would be ideal) The 'SPA' was just a spa bath on the front deck. It was a few steps down to the water, but a lot of coral on the beach so you had to wear reef shoes etc to get down. Quite a dark villa and deck due to the growth of the trees, and not overly private due to nearby villas. The better villas for privacy would be the three or so up the far end of the island - away from everything.

So the room itself was quite good and the daily maid friendly and very efficient. The rest of stay was less than ideal:

- Weddings/ parties, There were weddings scheduled throughout our stay. Also a large kids party. They take up the whole main beach area and is not a very nice feeling being on the side of someone elses party. We couldn't sleep the frist night due to partying going on in the big 'dorm' room located nearby. until 3/4 in the morning. And people talking loud right outside our unit. We had the same experience 2 nights out of 3.

- Food - the restaurant is very expensive for fairly average food. The staff not very helpful, some are friendly some are rude. Breakfast was basic. One guy made omelettes (he didn't look too happy about it). You had to wait about 15min for your omelette if there at the normal time. Lunch menu was OK. One evening I had a nice chicken curry. However on our third night we asked for the 'special' seafood pasta with tuna. It was written on the board - had been for a few days. When the food arrived the pasta tasted fine but the Tuna they served was flat out ROTTEN. Not just a bit whiffy but seriously past it. We asked the waiter to check with the kitchen. They of course provided us with another meal (fine) but I had asked for some feedback from the chef which was not forthcoming.

- Spa service - we avoided it. It looked horrible as per other reviews.

- General service - some staff were quite friendly, others lazy and rude.

- Walk around island was pleasant - but there is a ton of litter at the northern end of the island, just gross - they should clean it up.

-Activities. Didn't really seem to happen (eg Kava experience Friday night did not happen). Kayaks etc are ok, not high quality. Oh they did have a Melanesian Feast one night in the main are, but this was for guests from another resort ONLY, go figure?

- No pool which is a shame if you don't fancy the current/coral factor off the beach. Understandable though as it is quite small.

-More weddings scheduled - this was when we decided to bite the bullet and 'Escape from Erakor' After 3 nights, and with 2 remaining we decided to leave and try and find somewhere nicer. Giving up around AU$700 in pre-paid accommodation.

We went to Eratap. My God what a different experience. Absolutely perfect and worth every penny at the higher price point. We had 2 nights there (they were full from that point), then rented a car and a house in Mele Bay for a week (recommended).

So overall - avoid Erakor due to them trying to cram in weddings as well as regular guests. Also poor staff service, food and overall delivery.

Room Tip: Far end of the island for privacy. Around room number 23.

Friends stayed on Erakor Island and enjoyed it. We only had dinner there and thought it was fantastic. The setting is lovely - awesome views. Staff very attentive but the best thing was the food. The seafood was excellent, especially the fisherman's basket. Also, there is 'Happy Hour' around 5pm till 7pm, so good to sit and have a drink before dinner. Overall, as a dining experience I would definitely recommend it.

Just returned to Aus after staying at Erakor and attending my daughters wedding.
Loved the island, and it's sense of history.
The waters were crystal clear.
My daughter's wedding was wonderful, and the owners were more than accommodating in a last minute change due to an unfortunate delay in guests and family arriving due to the inability of our aircraft landing in Port Vila for 2 days.
The staff were warm and friendly and always extremely helpful.
We had a waterfront spa room ......it was comfortable and had a charm that fitted with the environment
I would like to return for another stay in the near future.

Our experience at Erakor is exactly as it should be for the price. I rarely stay in expensive accomodations, however as it was coming up to our two year anniversary and it was our first real trip together, we thought we would splurge!

The ferry to and from the resort is 24 hours and is free - the staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. One of the guys even took us out to have kava from a local nakamal. The snorkelling is pretty good - a lot of the coral is dead, but we found some pretty good patches. The equiptment (snorkelling gear, kayaks etc) were of good quality and were free for guests.

The rooms were exactly gorgeous - wooden floors, a day bed, clean, bright and airy - a big spa! Even a little porch to sit on, from which to watch the sunset. We stayed in a Waterfront Spa Villa which even had a little path leading into the water. Be careful though! It gets slippery!

Everything we ate there was excellent - including the free breakfast buffet.

If you have the money, definitely stay here for a few nights!

Stayed here recently and had one of the outdoor spa rooms which are very nice, these rooms are quite new and very comfortable with a outdoor daybed and the water just metres away, only comment would be the bedside lights are so dim you could not read a book in bed.

Staff are great and they work hard to keep everything clean with loads of people sweeping the paths and beaches, food is also good.

They do get 'day trippers' who walk around the place while your trying to relax on your beach front hammock, no cruise ships were in town while we were there but I am sure it would be busier if that was different, I noted they expect 22 cruise ships in August alone!

On one night they had a 'dinner special' on for people from the resort over the bay. For the rest of our stay the restaurant was less than half full as it was a quiet time but on that night it was full of families and kids and we could not get a table as it was also raining and they lose a bunch of the outdoor tables. We came back later after it had quietened down but it made for a very late meal and they should have advised people staying there to 'make a reservation' for that busy night.

We recently spent ten days here with our two sons; we all had the most wonderful holiday. Vanuatu is a beautiful place, but Erakor Island is a very special place, very calm and relaxing, surrounded by brilliant lagoon. Great swimming, snorkelling, kayaking. No complaints about the accommodation. The food in the restaurant was consistently very good, and how can you beat sitting under the stars, over the water, eating dinner? Or siiting on the beach watching open-air movies, eating pizza?
The staff are amazing. They were what made our time on the island so particularly special. They exposed us to many facets of their culture through their stories, drawings, demonstrations and explanations. Albert, Gilbert, Brian, Greg, Lita, Annie and all of the others made us feel so welcome and looked after us (including our boys) so well, they made us feel part of their family.
We can't wait to return.

Fabulous, relaxing, beautiful = Erakor Island Resort. We stayed for 11 nights in July and loved every minute. The staff are fantastic - thanks to lovely Annie, Lita, Albert, Jeremy, Junior, Nick, Bryan, Gilbert...Our teenage boys loved playing beach volleyball, trampolining, soccer, etc with Nick, Junior, Bryan and Gilbert. Highlights included the Melanesian Feast, movies nights on the beach with pizza (we got 3!!), reggae music nights with Albert and Jeremy, the list goes on...
Our family villa (no 2) looked over the lagoon; the rooms are spacious, clean and bright. It was very peaceful lying on the outdoor daybed reading and sipping a cocktail!
We picked Erakor as we wanted to lie on a beach and have all the creature comforts of a great holiday, good food, wine, accommodation (TV free) and activities for the whole family, without the crowds.
We will definitely return.
