“Above and Beyond”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

We have just returned from a week's holiday at Aquana. Grandad, Grandma, daughter and I imagine our unforgetable 23month old grandson Niko! We were met on arrival with enthusiasm a refreshing cocktail and cooling towels. The level of attentivness just didn't stop the whole week. The staff are exceedingly happy and helpful. The nanny service was so good that our grandson regarded them as his family for the week. Even the bar staff were happily carrying him around.
The entertainment offered was of a high standard with a local youth group singing and dancing and firedancers being our favourites. The rooms were very clean, comfortable and spacious .The grounds were kept beautifully. Swimming was a delight either in the pool or the lagoon. We became part of the Aquana family for the week with the entire staff waving us goodbye as we left.

Room Tip: Beachfront villas are the pick.

A big "Thankyou" to Hugo, Rita, Marcel and Fabbie.......we attended Jed & Lynda's wedding and O.M.G what an experience. Aquana is just so beautiful. The food is divine - hats off to you Marcel - every meal was absolutely beautiful. The owner's and staff are all so lovely - they orgainised day trips of snorkelling and visitis to blue water holes to swim, local boat trips to snorkel whilst supplying the best BBQ lunch cooked right there for us The wedding was the best wedding ever - great friends, food and drinks along with local village dancers and fire dancing...Aquana is the place to stay if you visit Port Vila and want beautiful food, total relaxation and want to experience Paradise......

There's probably not a lot more to say that hasn't already been said but here's another family's take on Aquana where we stayed at the start of March (with a 4 and 6 year old).
Getting to the resort is around half an hour - easily organised by the resort prior to arrival as we did. Most of the journey is along good roads though the last bit of the journey is slightly off the beaten track though don't be put off by this!
The first thing that impressed and continued to impress were the warm welcomes and how happy and friendly everyone was in the resort - it immediately put us at ease and we knew we were in for a relaxing stay. The resort is beautifully appointed with a man made beach area opening up onto a calm, shallow lagoon ideal for swimming and kayaking and with easy access to the open ocean for more adventure and breathtaking coral reefs and island beaches. One of the areas of the beach has a particularly high sulphur content - very good for you generally but even better - extremely buoyant so easy to just float around with no loungers/inflatables required!
The bungalows are well furnished with everything required for a good nights sleep, relaxing on the porch with a good book or watching a movie from the well stocked DVD library. The main building has the restaurant, bar and swimming pool providing a great area for enjoying the excellent food on offer, a bit of socialising in the evening or a swim in the very well maintained pool.
There are always nannies available to look after the kids as and when needed who are even available to go out on excursions and take some of the pressure of looking after the kids - ideal if you've got young ones but want to enjoy snorkelling or the waterfalls as we did! This is not a formal kids club and in our opinion far better and part of the benefit of being a small, boutique resort. The kids can be with you enjoying family time one minute but then if they want to go off and do something different, or the parents want some quiet time - the nannies are never far away and will be keeping an eye on the kids and seem to instinctively know when to step in - perfect! Our kids formed bonds very quickly with the these young ladies whose calm and gentle influence was fundamental to making our holiday such a relaxing experience.
Back to the food briefly, being foodies we were delighted to meet Marcel - a great chef with a genuine love of food - happy to discuss/recommend and even cook something entirely different to what is on the menu if that's what we came up with as an idea together - not something I've come across too many times and yet another example of what makes this place unique.
Other things to mention were the great massages that can be arranged, beautiful walks around the local area with the locals very welcoming and happy to give you directions if you get a little lost!
Thanks to Fabienne, Marcel, Hugo (and Rex!), Birgit and all of the staff for making us feel so welcome. Congratulations on creating such a tranquil oasis! We certainly intend to return before too long!

Mid January, 6 nts with 2 teenage kids- who gave it 9/10! A simple relaxed break with great food and lovely staff. Yes this is ideal for younger kids, but we didn't mind listening to the children having fun in the pool etc (it was peak school holidays and would be ideal for all types of people when it isn't!). My teens were very happy and the "nannies" and other staff members were happy to play soccer and beach vollyball with my son(and hubby) in the afternoons. It is away from everything, but we were happy to chill and only went off site a couple of times.
Staff always helpful.
Worst thing was the shower- weak and too hot or freezing, nothing in between!
Do ask to have the bedroom window blacked out.
Take your own snorkel gear if you have it.

Room Tip: The rooms 6,7 and 8 would be my first choice.

Fresh Clean Family Focused Incredible Value for Money and the best service and food possible. As regular travellers to many places with our kids - these guys and this resort deserve the awards they have been winning - Travellers' Choice™ 2013 Winner Small Hotels | Best Service

The resort is very cleverly and sympathetically ( low rise buildings, local healthy drinkable spring water and solar power ) placed over 10 acres with 400 metres of waterfront beach in a tranquil lagoon, only 15 minutes from the airport, but a world away from anything and sheltered from the strong currents and high winds the other big name resorts get on the ocean fronts, by a lush jungle island that you can explore anytime, with a short 2 minute kayak. We paddled out as a family and went snorkeling and swimming a few times. The resort has it's own spring water pool, lies in a tranquil lagoon right near a Dugong habitat, we did not see them on the outrigger snorkleing trip but the couple that went a half hour before us saw 3. A 5 minute kayak from the resort beach front and there is a freshwater spring that the local villagers have created as a natural pool, you can go snorkeling on your own around the front of the island across the lagoon and every night there is organised entertainment fire dancers, local tribal singing with limbo and even a trivia night. Happy hour each day is signalled by a huge Swiss Cow Bell. The restaurant standard food is created by a European trained chef who lives onsite with his own young Family so great care is taken that kids are not fed crappy food.

We did half and full day trips to town, cascades, waterfalls, turtle colonies, shark pools and the amazing Blue Lagoon which are all close by this resort. On our last day we did a lap of the whole island with a local driver named 'Louis' who was a Famous boxer and local celebrity.....overall an excellent getaway at a fantastic small and intimate resort with everything a family needs.

OMG The food was fresh, healthy and hardly a deep fried meal anywhere - what a relief to find that our kids were in nature, swimming in the lagoon, paddling kayaks, snorkeling and everything else under the sun and also getting a taste of natural food not covered in chips and batter - this is the only place to stay near Port Vila, and what a place to stay and eat, swim, paddle and explore - 6 nights 7 days here was perfect for our young family with kids 8,6 and 3. The kids made so many friends, including local village kids who's parents work at the resort.

Nothing was a problem, the rooms were so clean and fresh, the nannies ( free of charge most of the time ) were soooo nice and friendly and couldn't do enough to make our whole Family feel like we were in our own local village ( with all mod cons of course ). Our Bungalow was spacious and light and we felt very relaxed and spread out with the 5 of us and all our bags of too much stuff. Our Bungalow as they nearly all do, had a lovely view across the water of the sunset each evening.
Our little Family kept to our selves pretty much so we could reconnect after another busy year, but when needed every request for service or assistance and guidance was met.

So we felt very very lucky that we found such a low key high standard resort being professionally run by it's actual owners - not some random management team waiting to go somewhere else.

This resort doesn't wave it's family and kid friendly flag high enough, they openly encourage big families, family get togethers and kids holidays.

So many more things to write but got to help get the kids ready for reality and back to school tomorrow, bugger! We will be back again and Thankyou for making our Family so happy and relaxed we needed it!

We stayed at this great family friendly boutique resort from the 28 Dec until the 13 Jan 2013. This was our fourth time in Vanuatu and the husband and kids (11&8) and myself all agree it was our best family holiday ever.

We were warmly welcomed very late one evening by Birjit who briefly showed us to our spacious, clean waterfront apartment (no5). After a great sleep (the resort is very quiet) we headed to breakfast. Breakfast consisted of 4 cereal choices, two platters of fruit (plenty considering the no. of guests staying), 3 selections of bread & jams, 2 juice choices, tea & coffee. There is a hot breakfast menu which you may order one of; including lemon pancakes, eggs, omelette, sausages, bacon, corn fritters and baked beans. These meals could be varied to suit your tastes and appetite. I tried every meal during our stay and enjoyed them all.

After breakfast we met Fabienne who showed us around and explained how things 'worked'. Fabienne became our go-to person during our stay. She organised all activities, tours and went out of her way to make sure our family and the other 2 families we were travelling with were having a great holiday. Any suggestions we had were listened to and often implemented or problems we had were quickly and readily dealt with and resolved (shame on you Fabienne for being so nice!).

There is a complimentary transfer into town each morning at 10am and return service at 1pm. We used this service to exchange money, shop for souveniers, transfer to tours and stock up on supplies. We also visited Chill for a cool down and drink, Numbawan cafe for lunch (the pizzas, tuskers and coffee are still good!) and Waterfront for a icy cold drink. If you require a transfer it will cost 2,000 vatu ($21 aud) regardless of how many passengers travel. We approached other drivers and they quoted higher prices, so this appears to be a reasonable charge. The local Ni Van staff did mention you are able to access the local 200vatu ($2) bus, though you have to walk to a particular spot on the road(we discovered this towards the end so I did not investigate further). The resort is a 20min trip from port vila, you will need to consider this if you wish to visit port vila regularly.

Aquana offer a number of tours, we went to Eton/Blue Lagoon, outrigger/snorkelling, round island/bus hire, and the village tour. All were great fun and we were always accompanied by a staff member to keep an eye on the children. All food provided on the tours was of a very high standard and ample was supplied. We also went on private tours including the zipline, buggy riding, lunch at wahoo bar (havannah harbour) and takura springs our extended group enjoyed all these outings.

We ate some lunches and all dinner meals at Aquana. All meals were very enjoyable and Marcel is a great chef! Depending on the daily produce available he prepared specials including tuna sashimi, lobster with risotto marinara, lobster mornay with oysters, slow cooked beef and seafood stirfry. All meals were reasonably priced compared to Australian prices (approx $35 for lobster dishes). Marcel is passionate about food and loves talking about ideas for dishes and produce he has aquired from the market. The f&b staff are all lovely and provide great service, they are eager to please and will make that special cocktail - to your specifications.

About every second night entertainment was provided. This included trivia (with prizes), kustom dancing (guest involvement), and fire dancers. All entertainment was well received by guests of all ages and the fire dancing was spectacular. New year's eve included a high energy band (staff & guests all danced), fireworks and wishing lanterns. The kids were entertained by the nannies with a 9pm fireworks, marshmellow toasting, face painting and dancing. It truly was a memorable event for the whole family.

Our children did not complain of boredom or hunger for 16 days. This was due to Aquana's fabulous nannies! Each morning they would seek the children out and play games or undertake activities with them. Including crab catching, coconut palm weaving, lap lap making, collecting and eating coconuts & paw paw, fishing competition, kayak racing, card games, board games, visiting the village fresh water spring, investigating a kingfisher nest, volleyball, cricket, soccer, story telling and treasure hunts. The nannies would also hop in the pool with the kids. If you suggested an activity they were always willing and happy to do it. Huge thanks to Delinet (we miss you), Prescilla, Valerie, Vicki, Stephanie, Sophie and Nalini.

Julia was available most days for manicures and massages. She did a great job, skillfully and patiently painting my daughter's nails and painting frangipanis on each nail. My husband had a 1 hour swedish massage and two half hour back, neck & shoulder massages. He was very impressed with the massages which were reasonably priced. Julia has many years experience working at Lotus Day Spa and we highly recommend her (we regret not making more use of her services).

We spent very little time in our room, it was a meeting place for predinner drinks, a place to store our things and to sleep. There is a dvd player which the kids made use of some evenings (there is a wide variety of dvds to choose from). The furnishings and beds are comfortable. Ample clean linen, bedding and towels were provided. Our bathroom lacked storage space (shelf only) though other bathrooms had a cupboard. The shower did not have great water pressure and it was difficult to get a consistent temperature. There is no bath. The kids bedroom had full block out blinds so we had no issues with early risers. Our room had a white roller blind which did not encourage sleep ins, during our stay a black fabric curtain was installed behind it which improved our sleep quality. The room was well cleaned with care and attention to detail daily.

The pool was tested and chemically treated daily. We often found there to be only one or two families using the pool. I was always able to snare a lounge under an umbrella, and often enjoyed happy hour here. Other families preferred the lagoon, which is a nice spot for a swim. Reef shoes and snorkelling gear are provided by the resort to use in the lagoon or on a day trip.

After 16 days we were very sad to leave. We all had a fantastic holiday and were given a great sendoff by the owners and staff. We are planning our next holiday and are hoping to return to Aquana one day. Please PM me if you have any questions.

Thankyou Fabienne and Marcel for looking after us. Thanks to all the staff for making our stay a wonderful experience. To the front desk, nannies. restaurant, bar, kitchen and activities staff thankyou for being so friendly and making our holiday one we will always cherish.. We loved all the activities and the entertainment. The nannies where great keeping the children entertained. Our our day of checkout our plane was delayed 5 hours. It was no trouble for Fabienne and Marcel to let stay at the resort and rearrange airport pickup for us. Even when we left for the airport Fabienne said if anything happend with the flight to call them a they would come and pick us up and organise for us to stay there if we needed to. That is what I call service and committment, it was really appreciated by my family.
Thankyou
From Tony. Michelle, Jacob, Adam and Megan.
