This trip was the highlight of our Vanuatu trip.
We did the day trip with Unity Airlines. We choose Unity because we prefered going in a twin engine plane rather than a single engine cesna as you cross a lot of sea.
The four wheel drive in is an adventure in itself as the roads are pretty rugged. At the end you drive across the ash fields.
We had a packed lunch and lime juice from the resort which was OK. I would take extra food and water for kids. There are long drop toilets at the volcano but no water so and sanitsier is a good idea.On the way back our driver took us on a guided tour around some villages and the coast. We had to wait a hour or so at a resort for our plane to come back so we relaxed with a couple of beers.
The volcano is awesome. A short steep climb has you on the rim. The volcano erupts every 2 or 3 mintues and is spectacular. The noise is epic. Take a video if you can as well as a camera.
The whole trip is not for the faint hearted and even though it is expensive (about $1000NZ for the four of us) it was worth it. The whole trip took about 12 hours from beginning to end.
