I stayed at the Mendana for 7 nights in early August 2012 as part of a WWII tour group. While I was smart enough not to expect an upscale Hawaiian hotel, and knowing this hotel was in a third world nation, basic "hotel" services were lacking.
First off they wouldn't give us an extra key. As part of my tour, I bunked with a roommate. The rooms most of our group had were in the hotel section that had not been renovated. The bathroom was horrible and I'm a guy who can rough it! Old, dirty and not with a working shower head, ladies would not appreciate this room.
The hotel restaurant opened at 0630. However, the staff was consistently late in setting up the breakfast buffet. You would pay for a full buffet and by the time you were finished eating what had been put out, most, but not all food items were set out. We were on a schedule and had to leave. Staff was rude and could care less about service. Twice I asked for something and the waitress and/or waiter wouldn't even acknowledge my request. WTF?? Their rudeness prompts this poor service review.
I have been to third world nation hotels before. But, when a hotel advertizes itself as something it isn't; buyer beware!
Stay in another hotel.
