“Air conditioning!!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

In all honesty, this place was pretty average. The staff were pleasant but not impressive, the rooms were comfortable but basic and the pool was alright. However, after staying in island style accommodation for the previous two weeks, the air conditioning was a godsend. And the capacity to have a hot shower was also much appreciated. So I would recommend this place if you have been island hopping and need to spend a night in honiara before flying home the next day.

Stayed at the King Sol for a month for work in a hotel style room. There is another style of self contained unit that is available if you are staying long term. The room was large and clean with a fridge, kettle, microwave and safe. There is no free wireless in these rooms but you can buy a “BumbleBee” card to access the internet. There is a BBQ around the pool on Sundays which is worth a look. The hotel is located in central Honiara so you can walk to most locations or catch a SBD$10/km taxi which are everywhere.

The King Solomon Hotel is a perfect location for walking access to the city centre, museum and art gallery. The Hotel is situated on a steep hill side - if you like walking up many stairs, great - if not, you will need to check that the hotel cable car/lift is working. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful to clear up minor issues that arose (it really helps for the guest to show a little patience and a sense of humour). Our room was lovely and well-furnished. The pool was a most welcome retreat. The cultural show is a must-see entertainment. Restaurant food quality needed some work, especially breakfast.

Room Tip: The higher up, the better the view. However, if the lift is not working, the higher the room the mor...

I stayed at the King Sol from mid June to early August 2012. I lived there for 8 weeks as I was employed by a company working for RAMSI.

I found the King Sol to have a lovely tropical, friendly atmosphere. The multiple buildings are surrounded by lush gardens - it is either a scenic trip on the funicular (when it works which is most of the time) or a meandering hike up the hill. I ended up using the staircases as a part of my cardio training.

My room was right at the very top of the hotel along with a few of my work colleagues. This meant it was very quiet with good views over the sea from my window. Every second room gets a balcony - I didn't have one, but it would have been lovely to have a drink while watching the sun set. The air-conditioning wasn't the best (and it was winter) even after I got them to service it. The room was quite spacious, but a little dated (especially the bathroom). Alice, one of the cleaning ladies kept it beautifully clean. The rooms are not self-contained and do not have a washing machine.

The pool area is well kept and has a indoor gym overlooking it. They have a sausage sizzle every Sunday afternoon - got to try some delicious coconut flavoured sausages.

The hotel hosts a few events regularly each week -fun for those attending, noisy for those on the lower levels - some parties go until 1-2am on a Saturday night. There is a bar as well as a restaurant.

Breakfast was included for us - generally a choice of okay hot food, cereals and tropical fruits. I got addicted to having a fresh coconut every morning. I only had one or two dinners there - seemed expensive and I wasn't impressive with the quality. However I went for lunch a couple of times in the cafe next door - the meals on offer seemed to be tastier.

The location is back one street from the main road - I felt safe walking there during the day, but only walked with friends at night. Lots of other local and hotel restaurants within about 10 minutes walk. There is also a bakery and supermarket nearby.

Honiara is an expensive place to stay and eat - the King Sol is not means the most expensive or luxurious establishment in town. However it is close to the other more expensive hotels if you want to go out for a meal or pay to use their resort facilities. There are also much cheaper options for food if you eat where the local do.

Room Tip: For quietness - Try to get as high up as you can. Avoid the rooms just above the restaurant or pool...

At first sight, King Solomon Hotel clearly looks like it has seen better days. And it has. I stayed here several years ago. On the positive side, the rooms are kept very clean, the service is helpful (except perhaps the restaurant where you have to order your meal to someone sitting at the cash register), and there's a refreshing, clean swimming pool. But the rooms are crying out for refurbishment. And the price is too high for what you get. Yes, there's a fridge and a microwave, but the bedding, paint, bathroom and room feeling is a bit run down and tired. And watch out too for the Friday night nightclub scene in the bar/restaurant. It will be hard to sleep through the noise until nearly 1am.

Room Tip: Rooms further up the hill are quieter, but a long trip from the front desk.

The rooms are very basic; but they are clean and well-maintained. The room comes with a small refrigerator, microwave and electric tea kettle. The tea kettle in my room had so much hard water build up in that I could not use it. The help is very friendly. The pizza is good for the South Pacific, so give it a try. However, almost everything else for dinner is sub-par. The roast beef on Sunday night was so tough I could not chew it. The breakfast buffet is average; you can pay for the whole buffet, or just the cold buffet. I recommend the cold buffet: toast, cereal, fruit, etc. Keep an eye on the fruit, as some have bugs in them. The cable car is fun, if a bit slow. The music and entertainment at night is very, very, very loud! So if you have to be up and about the next morning, it can be hard to sleep.

Rooms are basic but have all you really need, given Honiara is usually either a business destination or a transit stop for tourists. Very good breakfast buffet, cafe next door great for lunch, hotel dinner is a bit hit and miss (best choice is pizza...).

Lively bar scene Friday night, cultural shows on other random evenings - if you are noise sensitive and staying over the weekend, take a room higher up the hill, or even facing the hillside instead of the balcony rooms with sea views. For an after dinner tipple try the tiny (but air-conditioned) Mojito bar - and even the Mojitos themselves if they have mint that day....

Funicular railway up and down the hill to the wooden rooms set on pilings, and all the carved pillars make the place stand out. In rooms: air-conditioners rattle but work, fridges and TVs work, beds are clean and reasonably comfy. It's not 5 star Hilton standards, but if you want more standardised comfort, the sea front hotels and restaurants are a short walk away.

Room Tip: Upstairs and facing the hill doesn't give you views, but is quieter over the weekend.
