We (husband and myself) attended a conference/workshop. Neither had been to the Solomon Islands before and we were both very open minded about what we would find. This blew us away. Serene, beautiful, unspoilt, luxurious, unpolluted, adventurous, back to basics type of resort. The food was the best I have had at a resort in a very long time, the staff were genuine, the mangement completely competent (and multi tasking) and the facilities matched and complemented the environment perfectly.
The bungalows are very spacious and simply, but beautifully laid out. Very traditional construction and decor with lots of local artifacts. All face the sea. The grounds are impeccably kept. The waters surrounding the island are so clear, that you can take a photo of the reefs sitting in a boat or standing on the jetty ! Snorkels and Scuba gear are also available of course to explore this in more "depth"...
Lunch on a derserted beach, an excursion to the local village, an impromptu performance of the local "orchestra" , a kayak around the islands, a boat trip to the next beach, a surf in the break or just a good book in the hammock on your verandah enjoying the tranquility of your surroundings. You choose.
No television, no phones, no internet (yes you can connect to the resort WiFi, but why would you). Bring your Ipod with your music, that is all you need.
The resort is now looking at a single bungalow on a neighbouring island (how romantic is that?), a house boat for rent, solar energy and getting their carbon footprint as small as they can possible manage. They have a very active involvement in improving the local medical facilties by having helped build a new maternity hospital. Very inspiring.
It was unforgettable and we are definately going back.
I have travelled a lot over the years and I work in travel. Tavanipupu has got it just right.
