“Excellent - well worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

The aquarium was amazing. The coral displays and fish were beautiful. We visited in January 2013. It is a very small aquarium. You can read the signs. It is a simple but well run aquarium.

Just a simple, well run and informative attraction that we enjoyed seeing - a must do for those with home aquariums!

“Small aquarium but worth the visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

Both my husband and I love aquariums and while this one is small it is still worth the visit. The only drawback is the staff while they are aware you are English speaking, only speak in French on the fish feeding tour. A good visual experience and you can read the signs with English being included but the overall learning experience is limited. The cost to visit is reasonable considering the usual prices in noumea. It's s pity it isn't open on public holidays as this type of visit is ideal on these days when everything else is shut.

“Cruise Ship Fodder”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

By world standards, Aquarium des Lagons Nouvelle Caledonia is a very small aquarium, and certainly, not as engaging as some others. But, cruise companies will try to convince you that it is the greatest aquarium in the world. In Summer, Noumea receives about one cruise ship a day. That's a lot of francs for the aquarium.

My wife and I have visited the aquarium a few times over the years, and not much has changed. Re-built in 2007, the aquarium initially displayed an interesting architectural feature of water cascading down the outside of its walls, but that seems to have fallen on bad times. Unless you are a photographer or a marine biologist, the visit should take you about 30 to 60 minutes. There are plenty of seats and viewing areas, media theatres and educational activities for the kids. The aquarium is closed on Mondays. Feeding of the fish takes place at 1pm. Entry for adults is 1000 xpf, but those over sixty get in a little cheaper. Local buses 10 and 11 stop outside. Exhibit explanations are in French and English, as are the brochures.

The exhibits mainly showcase New Caledonia's aquatic ecosystems. The live coral colonies thrive in the aquarium because it provides identical environmental conditions, namely water from the lagoon and natural lighting. Clean seawater from the lagoon flows through the different aquariums making for conditions nearly identical to those in the wild. The fish are all local species and come in a kaleidoscope of colour. You may have to be patient to see them all as some can be rather shy. I have seen photos of species taken by others that I have never seen in person at the Aquarium.

“Really Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

It is great place to visit and spend about an hour looking around. You can actually see live Nautilus which are native to New Caledonia.
