“It's OK”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

Loloata is about 2 1/2 stars if you are lucky but the ambience makes up for the less than comfortable rooms. If it wasn't for the people that come across for the day trip the place would be even better. The daily invasion of Filipino and Indian construction workers and their families to picnic or just use the facilities makes it less attractive for those paying guests. It is very expensive for what it is so I would expect that there is some sort of preferential treatment for guest instead of having to line up behind these long lines of day trippers to get your lunch. There should be a guest only area for relaxing but it is hard to get a seat under the shade trees because they are all taken. So the owners don't really seperate those that pay the money for the accomodation to those that bring their own food and drink to the island. Doesn't make too much sense really.

However once they have gone back on the 15:00 boat the place returns to normal and it is very peaceful and you can get a row boat or a seat under the shady trees.

Wish the owners would consider doing something to make it more attractive to come for the weekend to stay by either resrticting the number of day trippers or having a seperate area for guests to enjoy the facilities more.

This is the second time I went to Loloata. I enjoyed our snorkelling and of course the food.

Some setbacks were noticed too, as well as the good.
- We were provided with not good smelling pillows. The other rooms which were occupied by our friends had good pillows.
- The water pressure in our toilet was so low but our friends' rooms had a lot of water blowing out of their showers and faucets with such a strong pressure.
- The shower curtains are dirty. I mean for all the rooms and not just ours.
- Since we had three rooms, 2 rooms had no doors for the dresser (cabinet) while one has it, and yes, our room is one of the two.
- The other rooms were provided with wine glasses while ours had none.
- The hair dryer in our toilet is also out of order but the management only posted with a signage that it is out of order. They should have it repaired. Imagine if that was posted a long time ago.
- All of the coffee in our rooms are expired (2010 and 2011)
- A pack of Tetrabrik milk was in the fridge but was not replaced when it was already used, since we were here for 3 days
- I already paid for the expenses incurred during our stay (the reservation of food and accommodation was already paid days before) but while we were walking at the pier, the same girl to whom I paid to chased us and asked if we already paid! Whoa!
- We were charged with items not consumed, so we had them removed from our invoice
- The resort does not issue official receipts, just invoices, for all payments!

If you come here, let them know what you want. The first trip I had here was not terrible. It is just now.

We stayed here after trekking kokoda. I found the time travelling to the ferry long, but we were tired. The Island was a lovely little get away, saw a magic sunset, enjoyed some wines and had great service. It has basic rooms, but great views- we travelled in 2009

Lots of people end up going here because of easy access to Port Moresby, but honestly the diving and snorkelling and general scenery further north are all much better. The resort is all right and the food is decent, they are well organized and experienced and the transfers are efficient, but do not rely on this as your main PNG experience unless you are really pressed for time. If you can find an extra day, fly to Kokopo and dive there instead.

Room Tip: Up the hill, closer to the resort

I stayed at Loloata at the end of a two week dive trip, after staying at Walindi and also doing a trip on the Febrina liveaboard. I booked 3 nights at Loloata with 2 days of diving. Doing this had the added benefit of allowing me to avoid wasting another day in Port Moresby on my way home while letting me rest up a bit and get my land legs back after the liveaboard and prior to the long trip home to the US east coast.

Getting to Loloata was relatively straightforward, involving only a 15-20 minute van ride (transfers prearranged and included) and a 10-minute boat ride from the marina on one of the resort’s water taxis. The resort itself had 23 beachfront units, some duplexes with air conditioning. All units had nice balconies, and (as throughout my trip) fresh water was potable and supplied via rainwater or desalination.

The food was plentiful and very good, with lunch and dinner served buffet style and breakfast made to order. On Friday night there was native singing and dancing.

The air-conditioned units were a substantial distance from the main complex. That said, it was possible to walk around the entire island in about an hour, and there’s also a pathway up to the highest point on the island, which offers a terrific view. Tours of Port Moresby and other day trips can be arranged.

The island had many semi-tame but shy wallabies along the pathways, and there was a tree kangaroo and parrots in a large cage. The staff put out scrap vegetables from the kitchen for the wallabies who were near the main complex.

The resort had two spacious aluminum boats, both capable of carrying 10 divers but which were rarely full. Things were busier on the weekends when ex-pats came out from Port Moresby either for a day or the weekend. Nitrox was not available, fills were generous, and tanks were aluminum 80/yoke valve.

There were some excellent dive opportunities nearby, including everything from wreck, muck, to reef diving. Two dives I particularly liked were D’s Delight and Suzies Bommie, D’s Delight for its many crevices and canyons and fan covered walls, and Suzies Bommie for its shear proliferation of coral and fish. Many sites were within 4 miles of the resort although some were further.

There were two DMs in the water for five divers one day, and the impression I got was that they were not very experienced, based on a couple of things I observed.

All in all, it was a great place for a stopover and certainly beat hanging around in Port Moresby.

Room Tip: Rooms with AC are further away, but I thought it was worth the walk.

I stayed at Loloata for a few days in November and had a good time.

Pros:
- Comfortable spacious rooms
- Great meals with lots of food and good variety. Fresh seafood and tropical fruits every day. Lots of effort was made to accommodate specific dietary requirements
- Excellent friendly staff that went out of their way to make sure your stay was comfortable
- Felt safe and secure whilst close to Port Moresby
- Free boat ride to local snorkelling destination (although it costs to hire equipment)

Cons:
- There is a caged tree kangaroo that seems to be very miserable. It is on its own and sits staring into space, drooling. The cage is not large and is shared with about 6 parrots. I found this a very depressing spectacle and think the resort would benefit from letting this rare (and quite possibly endangered) animal live out its days somewhere more comfortable
- One of the staff killed a sea snake purely for his enjoyment. The sea snakes are not harmful if left alone and they are easily avoided. They enhanced my stay there as I found them interesting and was sorry to see one killed for no reason.
- Aircon did not seem as effective in my room as it was in others

Room Tip: Fan rooms (i.e. hotter rooms) are by the sea and have great views and aircon rooms (i.e. more easily...

The hotel is apparently great as a diving base but as an idyllic island resort it doesn't do too well on food and service. The rooms had great views overlooking the sea but the beds were not fitted with proper bedding. During most of my stay the water to my room was intermittent during the day as the workers would turn off the pipes for ongoing works. This became annoying half way in the middle of showering! Staff were generally friendly but one or two came across as rude. Though overall an ok experience (probably good compared to local standards), not on top of my favorite destination lists.
