“An adventurous excursion into the hinterlands”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

It's a bit out of the way, but the drive out to Varirata is very much part of the experience. Driving on serpentine roads scaling the mountains trying to dodge potholes and admiring the view.
Varirata itself has seen better days, but it's still in good shape. There's walking trails that'll lead to some beautiful panoramic views over the countryside and give you a real feel for the Port Moresby area. There's a barbecue area for having a nice picnic out in the open, and if it hasn't been raining the leeches aren't a problem :-)

“Seeing the national bird in the wild.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2014

The first time we went to the park it was raining, and the mist was so thick we couldn't see much. Fortunately, we returned on a nicer day and saw what the park can offer. We saw at least four different Raggiana Birds of Paradise. Getting there fairly early in the morning is a must, of course, because that's when they are most active. Otherwise, there are very nice trails and it was not crowded when we were there. Beautiful views of the city are another plus.

“Excellent birdwatching...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

...but not much else. We went with an organized birding group and saw many beautiful birds and some rare ones. Obviously built as a show place but now rather run down and little visited (a one hour drive from Port Moresby)

“A taste of PNG rainforest an hour from Pt Moresby”

Clear evidence of recent investment in this national park. Lovely trails that are easily accessible. Good birdwatching but transport needed.

“Varirata - a gem near the National Capital”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

it's a wonderful park in a spectacular location with fine views over the cliffs and across forests and savanah and down to the sea and teh National Capital and up towards the Owen Stanley ranges; great bird life, including birds of paradise and fine walks, but there have been crime incidences in the park, so best to have local company.
