“Service needs improvement, otherwise ok.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

Stayed in a 1bdrm apartment which was not in the greatest condition especially for the price I was paying. The apartment rooms conditions were below average, more so motel style. Second disappointment I had was the lack of security. For 3 nights straight, I don't know if it was locals or staff members...but they were drinking right through the night which was no issues ...but the fact that it went right thought til 4am & after several calls to the reception to have security check it out, it still didn't stop. This was disappointing especially when you are staying there for work and not being ale to get proposer rest. Impersonally did not feel safe and secure and stayed in my room at all times and only went down to restaurant during day.
When choosing a room, better to book the studio hotel rooms rather than the apartment rooms.

However, the restaurant was much better. Although they were Abit slow at times but the food was ok, especially their curry buffet nights. I quite enjoyed my breakfasts, coffees and dinner there so that was a bonus.

I must say, the front office staff were very helpful and friendly and so were the staff in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Book the hotel studio rooms, they're much more modern and cleaner. Feels Much more safer. Avoid...

Pros:
* New wing accommodation is terrific - spacious, tastefully decorated, 4 star+ standard
* Room cleaning/ maintenance service is great
* Reception staff generally attentive and well trained
* Seaside/ central city location is wonderful
Cons:
* Size/ ambience of lobby & restaurant poor and out of place with rest of hotel
* Restaurant staff generally inattentive, (bordering on surly at time) and appear poorly trained
* WIFI is us very expensive and erratic in its behavior.
*
* Cost

Room Tip: New wing is worth the extra

Yes, i know this is in PNG and the skills pool isn't exactly huge but the service here was amateur, disinterested and verging on rude. If i hadn't stayed in other hotels in Port Moresby or did not work in PNG then i might have thought that this was normal but no, the Crowne Plaza and Airways seemed to have managed to train their staff properly so why is it so hard for Ella Beach?

[rant alert]

Upon my arrival i waited while several of the staff chatted behind the reception desk and didn't bother to acknowlege me and, when i was offered assistance, was cast aside as anither customer demanded their attention for a faulty room key (which is highly annoying but no apology was offered after i waited another 3 minutes for them to sort out this issue). When i was served, the girl stared for an age at the computer screen before finally handing me my key. I was then 'helped' to my room by a young man who managed to accompany me in the lift and then stood at the lift door and merely pointed towards my room, with a 'your room is over there'.

My check out was equally disappointing and much the same, i did fill in a 'feedback' card but cleary this is just to make customers feel like they care.

And then we move onto to the restaurant, essentially shambolic service and very average food. I dined there in the evening and for breakfast, the only positive thing i have to say is that the kitchen did produce very good poached eggs but otherwise it had bad wine by the glass and extremely disappointing pizza made with pre-made pizza bases.

Despite all this, the room was very nice, comfortable and quiet so it really is such a shame that no one even managed a smile during my stay.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for the new wing

Be prepared, everything in Papua New Guinea is unreasonably expensive. The Hotel Ela Beach is situated 12 kilometres from the airport. The Hotel offers a free shuttle service. Air Niugini uses the Ela Beach Hotel as transit hotel.
The hotel standard is two stars for the old part and possibly three stars for the newer rooms. In the old section of the hotel a room goes for about USD 350.- without breakfast. A continental breakfast without ambitions costs USD 20.-. The rooms are clean, equipped with an flat screen television offering numerous Australian channels. They have a safety box, a fridge and a water kettle. Internet connection did not work during my entire stay of seven days. In addition it is prohibitively expensive and internet cards costs USD 25.- for 100 MB.

The restaurant serves generous portions but of rather low quality. The pizzas seem to be popular. Especially the pizzas made with some sweet tasty tomato sauce was not ro my taste. The restaurant is considered as one of the cheapest in town; but fish and chips for over USD 25.- or a steak for USD 40.- are no bargains.
There is a swimming pool next to the restaurant. The beach in front of the hotel is dirty and safety is a concern. There are no shops or alternative restaurants in walking distance. Walking after dark is not recommended.
The Hotel staff are all polite and welcoming, but most of them totally inefficient. It took 20 minutes to check out. Normally a second cup of coffee during the breakfast served after excessive waiting time, in spite the overstaffing.
The advantage of the Ela Beach is its location near the town centre and being one of the cheaper ones.

This hotel has a very spiffy new wing which looks beautiful with landscaped gardens and views over the bay, a nice lap pool and a gym room. Unfortunately I was put in the old section which was a bit run down with a cramped bathroom and I had one of the few rooms without any view of any sort which was a shame. However, the bed was comfortable and the aircon worked which is fine for a work trip - and I was able to use the facilities in the new wing. The reception is exceedingly slow (particularly so if you have something slightly out of the ordinary to sort out). I ended up spending over two hours in total at reception on 2 different days sorting a billing issue. The bistro was fine - sometimes a they had a slightly odd take on the food you are expecting but the service was good and friendly.

Room Tip: Make sure you get in the new wing.

The staff are friendly and the rooms are what you would expect from Port Moresby.
don't be fooled by the beach over the road, you can't swim there due to rubbish etc.

Also be aware that in POM it is typically a cash based society and booking things tothe room can become a bit problematic. Easier to use cash.

They have a laundry and dryer whioch comes in handy. even if you wash and hang up in your room, nothing dries in that humidity.

Pool was good, staff friendly, restaurant better than expected.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the bar and pool area. This is actually a popular night spot in POM, and you do...

In summary, it was a good stay. Lots of little niggles that really don't amount to much individually, but just showed that the place needs some better attention to detail. However the staff, including Stuart, the Hotel Manager made up for it. Just remember what Dorothy said - You ain't in Kansas any more!
I stayed as a business traveler for the best part of five weeks in November/early December, split into two stays. The first stay I was on the old side, the second, on the new side. Paying close to US$400 a night as a westerner you would expect something grander, but this is PNG and prices have been knocked for six by the LNG activities.
That said, it isn't uncomfortable. Even on the old side the rooms have everything they should have most of the time, and the air conditioning works well if you are oppressed by 30-plus degree heat, which I most certainly am.
I found the front desk to be really helpful, and I didn't have any troubles checking in, or out, or getting assistance. It is a small reception area, though, and can be busy and confusing at times.
Where the place falls down is the small things. The quality control on the housekeeping side needs fixing - some days there were towels in the small gym, sometimes there weren't. Some days the water cooler there was full - sometimes it wasn't full, or there were no cups. One out of two treadmills and the stationary bicycle were out of service the whole time I was there.
Sometimes I got a facecloth in my room, sometimes I didn't. Please have someone check each room thoroughly once it has been cleaned for a new guest. Laundry service was efficient, though.
The restaurant (Beachside Brasserie), Ozzies Bar and the gift shop are not run by the hotel. Ozzies bar is dead has no live music any more and closes at 10:30 so the staff can catch their bus home. The gift shop is OK - I only went in briefly.
Hats off to the the Beachside Brasserie though - good honest food, solid helpings and mostly attentive staff - sometimes their minds wander. Interesting pizza toppings - I really liked the potato and rosemary. Just wish there were more options in the "smaller meals" category, but I guess the option is not to eat it all!
The hotel is right on the beach, and it makes a nice morning walk on a Saturday and Sunday. Ask about safety, though. You will see lots of expats walking during the day - but not at night.
Internet access is wireless, you buy a card for so many Mb - 50 Kina for 100 Mb I paid. A word of warning - make sure your automatic updates are turned off! The cards have a warning on them, but I still burned through cards unexpectedly sometimes.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go for the top floor of the new wing - all the rooms overlook the beach.
