“Tropical garden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2012

Pool, gym, massage ... there is a lot of activity in Torarica if you are into an active holiday under the tropical sun. The interior is being reconstructed: I stayed in both an old and a new room, and there is a big difference. The modern ones are good standard, clean, and with a modern shower/toilet area. The beds were very comfortable and the size of the room is good - although I was alone in a double room, but there was plenty of space.

The best part of the hotel is the garden. The pool area is pretty, the hut-style gym/massage facilities looked attractive, although this time I did not have the opportunity to actually try them - will bring equipment next time! They have organised rumba/yoga/aerobics classes, which seemed well attended. The tennis courts are also well kept. I particularly enjoyed the country house and Pier by the Suriname river - a really peaceful and scenic spot. The country house seems a bit run down and underutilized, but this really was the attraction for me: a great place to wind down, enjoy the scenery, or even get some work or reading done in silence and quiet.
Food is OK - it does offer a bit of variety, but after a week or so you have seen it all... Service is good and helpful - in general, people in Suriname are very kind, helpful and good - natured. For first-time Europeans, the pace may seem slow at the beginning, but after a few days most pick up the 'speed' and take things easy!

The gardens are well kept and looked after. They are pretty much my idea of what a relaxing tropical garden would look like!

Since I did not visit the casino, I have no comment on that. The location of the hotel is good, although if the construction works inside the hotel and in the area are finished, it will be even better. The sights and restaurants / cafes are close Paramaribo is a walking town anyway, almost everything is easy to get to .

There are several trips organized to the interior and Torarica offers a tour service: most mornings the service desk is manned and helpful staff will guide you to the trip of your choice.

The cash machine and gift shop inside were also good service. One more positive point: all the staff speak fluent and good English. Since the majority of visitors come from Holland, Dutch is the primary language but English gets you by perfectly.

All in all, relax and enjoy your stay - I certainly did!

Room Tip: Garden view is more beautiful, though street side may be cooler, and less air-conditioning required.

This was a choice of my host. I would have picked the other one with the similar name. I cant imagine why they chose this hotel because I got a room on the first floor having to walk through a construction site as almost all the nearby rooms are out of service and under full construction. But the room itself was fine. Everything worked perfectly from A/C to Satellite TV, to the included internet, and the price was great. The breakfast was very limited but you can work with it. Nothing bad to scale down. I hardly interacted with any staff after check in. This place is going to be fine after renovations are done, so I have no qualms recommending it. But for now, consider the other nearby options.

Room Tip: Maybe ask for a newly renovated room while somehow avoiding the construction area.

Based on the reviews, I requested from the local coordinator to book for us two single rooms at the "Royal Torarica Hotel", but somehow the local coordinator in Suriname decided to make the reservations at the "Torarica Casino Hotel". At first we though that there is not going to make much of a difference as both hotels are owned by the same group and they are one next the other, but as it turned out we were wrong…. there is a huge difference between the two hotels, and now I can categorically say that the Royal is at least two levels better than the Casino (and at the same price). Not only regarding the premises but also in service.

Besides the fact that the hotel is now under renovation, I was at first given a room facing the main busy street….. with lots of cars and noise coming to the room.

Overall I can say that the front desk staff at the "Casino" hotel is NOT very friendly nor very helpful if you "dare" to ask for something like changing the room or calling to request towels when the housekeeper is not available. Just the opposite to the reception staff at the Royal hotel.

In conclusion my recommendation is to try the Royal Torarica, however if you still go to this hotel, then try to avoid the rooms facing the main street – odd numbers from X01 to X27 (X representing the floor – 1, 2, 3)

Room Tip: Try to avoid the rooms facing the main street – odd numbers from X01 to X27 (X representing the floo...

This nice hotel is finally renovating its rooms. The new rooms are modern, though the open shower and toilet area ( previous a bathroom, now the toilet and shower have an almost open view from the room) are not a good idea. Most people like their privacy when visiting the toilet. The gym is very outdated, old rusty equipment. The location on the riverside in the middle of town is superb, so overall a good hotel

..while exploring the city . Had been curious about the hotel as many Surinamese had mentioned this location. Decided to have dinner in the garden area which was nice and pleasant . Every employee we encountered was pleasant and fluent in English . Fun and interesting . Taxi service back to the Krasnapolsky was a fair price from the casino .

... since this hotel has old and very muffy rooms, with small bathrooms and nice new bright room with more space in the bathroom

Besides, this is a very well placed hotel with very friendly service at a good price.

Breakfast offers too little choice and swimming needs maintenance

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room

Ordinary rooms in the 3- to 4-star range surround a 5-star garden area featuring a pleasant pool, spacious patios, plenty of free-standing massage huts, a palapa fitness area with whirlpools and much more. The massages are very good value by U.S. standards. The grounds, especially around the docks and landing areas, are grand for evening strolls.

Suriname is very Dutch, but there is always an English speaker at the front desk. Most of the guests here are from the Netherlands – they regard Suriname as “tropical Holland” – but most of them also speak English.

A bonus of all that Dutchness is the availability of excellent Dutch pancakes in a pannekoeken café less than one block away. A short taxi ride away is a large and very popular Chinese place. Breakfast buffet at the hotel was standard hotel breakfast buffet. The hotel's menus and indoor restaurant areas looked unappealing, so we ate elsewhere for lunch and dinner.

Strange experience: In the middle of the night a maid tapped on our door and said she'd come to change the pillowcases?!?

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms put you steps away from the garden area and have larger patios.
