“Nice food, not so nice dance...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

The restaurant is part covered, part out in the air, which turns it interesting and pleasant. They serve meat (parrilla) and it´s really nice, at very reasonable price. Waiters are not really prepared to host foreigners, but the owner is always there to help and make sure you get good service. At 10 PM a guy came and played the harp beautifully. The dance is very simple, costumes also, but after more harp, 3 singers performed a series of paraguayan songs, which was nice too.

“If you want a folk-lore show, with edible food at reasonable prices ..............”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

During the Stroessner dictatorship (1954-89) restaurants offering a folk-lore show were plentiful in the Paraguayan capital, the Yguasu, Hermitage and Jardin de la Cerveza sprig readily to mind although there were others. However, since the return to democratic government the number seems to have been reduced to two, of which one (La Pascuala) is part of the Hotel Excelsior. The Ciervo Blanco therefore remains the only "pure" example of the genre. This is a large establishment, partly open to the sky - although I must confess that having only visited it at night it was not until my third or fourth visit that I noticed this. Primarily a night spot, the Ciervo Blanco is essentially a restaurant with a floor show and a small dance floor. The show is extensive and only partly folkloric, the remainder being Paraguayan pop and the entertainment varying from the excellent to the mediocre although it does invariably include the Paraguayan harp and the memorable "bottle dance" in which the dancer (always female) dances with as many as seven bottles balanced on her head. Although primarily a parrillada, offering the usual variety of grilled meats, some alternatives are available and all that I have tried are palatable if not memorable. Service varies from the hyper-attentive to the off-hand and considering the entertainment also offered the Ciervo Blanco is reasonably priced. Being a sucker for Paraguayan culture I usually manage to visit it at least once during any visit and recommend it to any visitor wanting to get the "feel" of Paraguay. However, they should restrain any gastronomic expectations. A gourmet spot it is not!
