Beautiful site and accompanied by a very informative guide, it is well worth the entrance fee, the drive up the mountain is also nice.

“Lovely Village; Lots of Handicrafts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

A visit to Guatavita on a sunny Sunday afternoon allowed us to share some time with locals who were enjoying this relocated village and the new construction, with architecture that matched the old colonial part.

We didn't buy any handicrafts, but there were plenty to see as you stroll around. Great rock work was pretty to look at but made walking a little difficult at times. You can drive to most of the areas, so handicapped people can still enjoy this tourist spot.

“Emerald lake in the country of emeralds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

Lagoon Guatavita is simply amazing in its peaceful beauty. The emerald lake surrounded by green mountains is lovely and, what is really good, is that you need to hike a bit uphill. Very nice workout and not too challenging, just wear hiking half-boots and you will enjoy it. The views around the area surrounding the lake reminds my of Tuscany hills a bit: spectacular! Beautiful flowers everywhere... You will know more about the gold at the bottom of the lake if you visit Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) in Bogota first: the legend of El Dorado is all about this little lake. I would suggest to go with a guide and take a white cab from Bogota: the cabs are private and very safe. It is not the cheapest but certainly the safest option (very inexpensive option if compared with the US can prices). On the way back to Bogota you can visit the a Salt Mine Cathedral - only 30 min. from Guatavita and you will see a unique place. Venture outside Bogota, but be careful and arrange a driver at the hotel.

“Prepare for a short but very steep climb. Then Enjoy!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

The laguna is nice and allows for some nice photos, especially with the beautiful flowers around it. Not much room for alterations. You follow the path, climb up very steep for a few hundred meters (not too much) and then get up there and enjoy the view. Would definitely help to know more about the place before coming (read or visit the Museum Del Oro, if you have the time). Once you get down, at the other end, don't be tempted to walk back, It will take you more time than you imagine, as the path doesn't go straight back. Instead it leads down to the north-east and then turns 90 degrees to the south-east, climbing up the hill again. So take one of the rides back for a very small amount, and save a lot of time.
