“Lovely & Charming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

March 2009, we spent four days is the lovely hotel in Bogota's historic district. We breakfasted each morning in the pretty indoor courtyard on fresh fruits and juices, then stepped out front onto the cobblestone street. The room decor was ultra contemporary in our first room. We returned a few days later and stayed in a more historic room overlooking the front door.

Later in our stay we discovered a modern swimming pool in the basement. Not sure how they got it there. Very nice. Well equipped locker rooms.

Cab drivers warned us not too walk around the neighborhood at night. It was fine during the day. Lots of students from the university. Not far from the Botero museum.

Room Tip: Ultra modern rooms on the upper floors, historic in some other spots. Both nice.

Dear Guest

Thanks for sharing you experience at our Hotel.

Cause we are in the historical and gubernamental area of Bogotá, each day thousands of people walk the streets and at night university students, but we haven´t many residents so streets are so quiet at night, but is guarded 24 hours because is in front of the foreing affair relationship ministry and closer to the nariño´s palace, it is so safe.

Thanks for visited us and we hope you will come back soon

Best regards,

LINA CARO

We only stayed one night but it was lovely. Our judgement may have been slightly coloured by the fact that for the week leading up to our night at the Opera, we has been staying in places that did have hot running water. That said, the Opera is a class act - beautiful historic architecture, good service, fantastic location and good food at breakfast. The only thing is don't get too excited by the idea of the swimming pool - it's nice, but not that big.

Dear Captain

We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at our hotel.

The pool is part of the Spa, specifically for relaxation, we have an agreement with a sports center where guests have access to swimming pools more suitable for sports when requested.

We hope you visit us again.

Greetings and best wishes.

Everything about our stay at Hotel de la Opera was excellent. We arrived late at night, and a friendly hotel driver was waiting for us. When we arrived, we were ushered to our lovely room which had a balcony overlooking the street. It was a very nice touch that we appreciated even more the next morning when we could take in the view. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of fresh Colombian fruits and juices; the omelette station was great, too. There was working wifi throughout the hotel, which is uncommon in other Colombian hotels. The only negative was our transport back to the airport on the day of departure. We expected to be in the same comfortable town car in which we were picked up. Instead, we were transported in a small, cramped taxi that would have cost half the price had we hired it ourselves. Overall, though, we very much enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony -- great views!

This was my first visit to Bogota and the hotel was perfect - location, room and amenities (like complimentary WiFi), helpful and courteous staff and the Colonial architecture. The complimentary breakfast - beautiful fruit, pastries, hot omelet and cafe con leche - was a bonus. The Police presence in the hotel's Candelaria district was reassuring.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

I have stayed for 6 nights at Hotel de la Opera. First on a business trip, the last 2 nights for visiting the city.
I will first describe the good sides:
- Lovely building, in the historic part of Bogotá. La Candelaria.
- Very good attention from the staff, especially in the restaurant.
- Very good buffet in the morning. Fruits, juices, breads, omelettes... delicious.
- Good restaurant at night. They can arrange romantic tables with rose petals and candles.
- The best of all: the spa. Great pool, relaxation area, sauna. The hammam wasn't so great, it had a weird smell.

The not so good side:
- I first stayed in a room on the ground floor, colonial Patio. Very big room, with nice bathroom, good amenities. It wasn't cold at all. I liked all about it except... it was very noisy. I could hear when my neighbour lit the bathroom (loud air ducts noise), as it faces towards the street you can hear all the pedestrians go by talking, or cars parking... Fortunately I had earplugs. Otherwise I doubt I could have slept.
- The last night I stayed in a smaller upstairs bedroom. Still very noisy. The neighbouring bedroom had a baby and he was crying loud... not nice...
- The spa should not be accessible to small children. I had a massage on sunday and a small kid was playing around in the pool with his dad. It is not appropiate if you are trying to relax.

The area of Candelaria has all the historic museums and sights. It is pretty safe during day time. But at night time, it became a bit dodgy, and there were very few options apart from the hotel's restaurant, to dine out or go to a bar. The guide recommended me not to walk around after 20:00hrs. So if you want to experience the nightlife of Bogotá and a more contemporary setting, I would recommend staying in Usaquen or Zona G, which offer great options and nice parks and plazas to hang around.

Hotel de la Opera is a beautiful old house with beautiful views of the center of Bogota. The location is ideal, near the plaza de armas, and the street has a lot of security since it is behind important government buildings. Not much traffic on the street for the same reason.
The service was excellent, breakfast in the pretty restaurant was good and fresh, and the pool, sauna and steam room very relaxing. The hotel has several restaurants, one on the top floor with beautiful views of the city. There is bar off the main lobby. Ask for a room in the newly renovated tower for more modern atmosphere. We had a large group staying at the hotel and they attended to us very well.

We spent 2 nights in this beautiful Hotel. Most of the staff spoke some English, but there was always someone available who was fluent. Despite my very poor Spanish, we had few problems and lots of fun with the very patient staff. The heated indoor pool was a pleasant temperature for a quiet swim after dinner, when there was rarely anyone else there. Each room was different, our adult daughter was in a separate room, and we had a lovely view from the window. The food in the restraunts was nicely varied allowing for a good range of choices. The location was great for what we wanted and security was such we were never concerned. We would happily return to this hotel and have a very pleasant base to explore more of Bogota, but for the sake of the staff I'd learn more Spanish - it is after all a Spanish speaking country!

Room Tip: We had rooms in the Deco area which were quiet & had good views.
