“Curtain, sheet and locks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

The private single room with private bathroom is just great. I moved around furniture a bit to be able to sit up and lean against a wall. Rubber (or plastic?) mattress cover repels the fitted sheet; it's worh breaking out your own sleeping bag liner. Hostel location - it's great to be surrounded by university students! Super bookstores. Breakfast is only adequate. Very good WiFi. Laundry handed in at 9 a.m. was clean and dry by noon. Staff was terrific for helping with luggage, taxi at 5 a.m., wake-up call, etc.
The first room I visited was unlockable: neither windows nor doors could actually be sealed. I secured the second room by wedging a ballpoint pen through the right place in the window frames. Test doors and window shutters to be sure they won't just pop open. Shower is hot with plenty of water, but a really inadequate shower curtain, so the floor is swamped. No wonder the laminate flooring by the bathroom door is lifting.

This hostel was wonderful and helpful while we were in Bogota. All the facilities are pretty new and are therefore nice, clean and updated. The cheap breakfast offered (4000 COP) is delicious and cheap - eggs, toast & marmelade, fruit and coffee/tea. Also, it is by far the most affordable hostel in La Candelaria for a private double. At night, there is are affordable drinks if you want to just hang in the hostel.

However, if you are like us and try to save money by cooking in hostels, do not stay here. The guest kitchen is tiny tiny, in what was intended to be closet space - only a tiny mini fridge, limited utensils and standing room for maybe two people. They have a large beautiful kitchen the staff uses only for breakfast but its not available for guest use.

Overall, good value for the money...but plan on eating out (not necessarily a bad thing!)

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your kind review.

We agree that our guest kitchen is could be larger, but unfortunately because the house is a historical landmark, we are not allowed to expand it beyond its current size. When the kitchen is crowded we open our staff kitchen so that it is a little easier for everyone. This usually requires that one of the staff members be available to supervise, as we store all the hostel's food there and can't leave it unlocked.

Seeing as this seems to be an inconvenienve for guests, we are going to build on your suggestion to revise this so that the staff kitchen is open all the time. I'm sure that by the time you visit us next, you will be pleased with the changes!

Best regards,

Daniel

The rooms and showers are very clean, the colombian coffee delicious, the common áreas very Nice, the breakfast cheap and good, the staff helpful and kind; all Nice places are very closed, in general excellent!

I've just returned from a trip to Colombia with friends and can't say enough good things about Explora. First of all, the location is great: It's close to restaurants and tourist attractions, and it's easy to walk almost anywhere. The staff was extremely high-spirited and willing to answer all of our questions and dole out helpful advice and traveler tips. In terms of the space, it was exponentially nicer than other hostels I've stayed at (especially considering the price). The hostel is modern and recently renovated (the bathrooms look brand-new) and there's always hot water (a rarity in most hostels). I'll definitely be staying at Explora next time I'm in Colombia!

I had the best time when I stayed at Explora. From the second I arrived, the staff were so friendly and helpful- they gave us great recommendations for restaurants and bars in the area. It's in the perfect area for tourists too, right by the gold museum and Plaza Bolivar.

Also, all of the amenities at Explora are really nice, much nicer than the other hostels I have stayed at in Bogota in the past and on my travels elsewhere in Latin America. Other hotels have crappy towels and uncomfortable sheets, but this hostel doesnt sacrifice comfort for price. There was hot water the whole time we were there as well as heating, and the rooms and common spaces were extremely clean.

Great location in the Cadelaria area of Bogota. We were able to walk anywhere we wanted to go and had an amazing dinner close by of wood fired pizzas and IPA at the Bogota Beer Company (for anyone missing good beer, their IPA is the best we have found in Colombia and much of S. America). The staff was great in helping us to arrange transport and answer any questions we had. The rooms are spotless, and I really mean spotless, and the shower had great water pressure and really hot water which is not always to be expected at hostels. We stayed there on two separate occasions during our time in Colombia and I would highly recommend it to others.
