“Walk to the sights and funky style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

We arrived in the afternoon and were given one of the top rooms with a balcony looking over the city. Our room was funky and spacious, with hot water, and a fabulous large, comfortable bed - unlike the tiny "doubles" you usually find elsewhere. The night administrator was amazing - in about ten minutes he mapped out everything we needed to see , which helped a great deal. He also spoke English, which was a first for us. The only drawback was the day administrator's slightly curt manner - not totally in line with a holiday - but she did make a few phone calls on our behalf for which we were very grateful. The breakfast was average, but really standard fare for Colombia, so nothing extraordinary but also nothing unexpected. Directions to the hotel could be better - it's not easy to find if you are driving - or walking probably.

Room Tip: It's a lot of stairs - but the top rooms have balconies.

We had booked a room in the sister hotel to Casa Guadalupe (a few doors down the street) but when we arrived late at night we were ushered up the street to this newer addition to the owner's portfolio. I'm sure the other hotel is equally nice, but we were glad we ended up in the Casa Guadalupe.

Our room - 301 - was large with lots of light and lovely wooden floors. The bathroom was probably the biggest we've had during our time in Colombia. The room decor is what I'd call urban chic, quite bare but very pleasant. There was even a bean bag. There is some noise from the street, but nothing that worried us too much, and a little bit of noise from the room above due to the wooden floors. We didn't find this intrusive. We'd booked for two nights but enjoyed ourselves so much we stayed an extra day.

The location is excellent. Just around the corner is a small plaza with a number of bars and restaurants, and you are only a short walk from most of the sights in the historic Candelaria district. I know some people have experienced crime in the general area and others have found it a bit sketchy, but we didn't feel it was threatening at all. Typically there were lots of people around on the streets - this is a big student area - although one day we were there was a public holiday and the streets were pretty empty, which wasn't quite so reassuring.

The staff here - from the person who greeted us when we arrived late at night to the owners - were all very friendly and helpful. Offering advice on things to do as well as sorting out our washing during the public holiday when most things were closed. When we left there was some confusion over the bill and we ended up paying slightly more than we should have (although we didn't know that at the time and happily paid the bill). The next day I received an email from the owner telling me we'd paid too much and offering me a refund. In my opinion very professional and typical of the attitude of everyone who works here.

Breakfast includes fruit and eggs with bread and coffee. It was all very fresh and tasty, sadly it was a bit too cold in the mornings to eat it at the outside tables.

Would definitely stay here again.

We spent 4 nights in this hotel, first night was in room 301, which is very big, cold and empty. Has only 2 chairs, the bed, 2 bedside tables and the closet. But not even a draw or something to cheer up the atmosphere. So this was the reason for asking another room for the next day. We had 402, I think, which was much better, we had also curtains and the room looked a bit cozy. The internet is not great; we were close to the door all the time when we needed, and evenso it failed in the most important moments. From the all 4 breakfasts, one was very good prepared, on a Sunday, maybe she works only Sunday, I dont know. This lady was very kind and she offered more croissants, the juice was really good and she was enough kind to let us keep the luggages for 2-3 hours more, till we had the flight. Oh, and in the bathroom, there are no curtains, so the other neighbours may see you when you are taking a shower or when you simply use the bathroom.
The location of this hotel is so-so, anyways we found it very difficult, you may hear people down yelling: Stop the thieeef!. But this is Bogota, not so safe.
Maybe I would come back, but with a repelent this time, because I had like 4 small "pals" who bited me in this hotel.

Room Tip: We had experience with 301 and 402. More than that, I dont know. Still, I would recomend 402 , is ha...

Even though the location of the B&B is not so great, it's in a small lane, far up the hill. You can still walk to the centre of town, which is nice!
The House itself is lovely! The staff are very friendly, and the breakfast is generous.
My brother and I spent 3 nights there, and we had a very comfortable stay.
The rooms are well appointed, and we were on the top floor of the house, and had a lovely balcony, with a great view.
Massimo and his partner are very informative, and even the staff that is there day and night, are great.
It was a great way to end our journey in Colombia!

Weigh the value of the convenient location and hospitable accommodation against the potential security risks in close proximity.

The staff were extremely friendly, outgoing and accommodating. The rooms were super spacious and clean. The breakfasts were delightful with various fresh fruit, coffee/tea and juevos and provided an excellent opportunity to meet some of the friendly, outgoing, mostly late 20s/early 30s professionals and/or mid-50s professionals staying at the hotel. At a little extra cost, the airport transfers were smooth, seamless and able to be arranged for late at night (11pm). Wifi was solid in the rooms. Enough good things cannot be said for the hotel itself!

The location of the hotel, however, had both pros and cons - with the cons being the more memorable. On the positive side, it was extremely easy to get around the historic La Candelaria neighborhood and convenient to many museums, restaurants, etc. On the negative side, certain immediately surrounding neighborhoods (e.g. Egipto) are considerably more poor and reputed to harbor significantly less friendly elements. In my personal circumstance, when walking back from the historic area to the hotel in broad daylight on Calle 11 (near intersection with Cra 2), which was busy with many pedestrians at the time, a small group of 5 ~20-year old kids ran up behind my (female) friend and I and held knives to our throats. We each gave up our small backpacks (carrying cameras), but fortunately kept the majority of our valuables that were distributed elsewhere. Personally, I'd recommend not carrying a backpack (as even a small one increase your profile) and give the Egipto area a few (more) blocks of buffer.

To be perfectly clear, this was absolutely no fault of the hotel whatsoever (we were still 4-5 blocks away), but certainly one can understand how this type of incident can put a certain unappealing spin on the beginning of a trip. Of note, the hotel staff attempted to contact the police to have them come by to file a report, but were unsuccessful on several attempts (as were we after speaking (in spanish) to several police on the street about it who made calls and promised to send someone by though it never happened).

With hindsight being 20/20, I would choose to stay elsewhere on my next visit - either closer to the center of La Candelaria or in a different zone.

The good: The staff are friendly, helpful, and do a very nice job to make you feel welcome. Guillo did an especially good job. Massimo, the owner, was also very helpful. The room we stayed in (402) had a nice balcony. Breakfast included in the room rate. Inexpensive, good value. Comfortable bed. Spacious room. Good location close to many attractions, museums, etc.

The bad: More amenities in the room, like a refrigerator, table/desk, and more reliable hot water would be useful. This is no fault of the hotel, but a word to the wise: be very cautious after dark in this neighborhood

Room Tip: Room 402 has a nice balcony

Centrally located in the historic part of town, close to bars and restaurants. Although there are some really dodgy characters walking around the area. I would not say that it's very safe late at night to walk around the hotel on your own. There is 24 hours security at the hotel.
The hotel is very new and the italian owners have decorated it nicely.
The rooms are incredibly spacious and clean. I could open my suitcase for once and throw stuff around and there was still enough space to walk. However the showers only have lukewarm water and there is no heating in the room and it can get quite chilly at night.
Guillermo is incredibly friendly and welcoming. He was extremely helpful and worried about our own safety and well being when we arrived late one night. Very sweet!
Breakfast is of good standard.
The rooms can be quite noisy as the local neighbours are very loud and sing and talk till the wee hours in the morning.

Room Tip: The rooms on the upper floors are a little quieter
