“Interesting and important site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2012

Tiwanaku is a very nice site just an hour and a half from La Paz. It has a very interesting pyramid (though the botched repairs nearly cost it it's UNESCO status).

The Puerta del Sol is the star attraction, but much smaller than you would imagine.

The museums are a bit poor, but the giant statue is very impressive. You get a ticket that allows you into the two museums, the main site and the Puma Punku site for 80 Bolivianos, so it is actually a very good deal.

I would recommend that anyone interested in history or archaeology visit. We booked a tour through Julius travel and we paid 180 Bolivianos for transport, entry and lunch.

Tiwanaco, a ruin of Inca city off La Paz..

...the scenery to the west of La Paz is breathtaking...endless plateau...arid trees and grass make it special....

Tiwanaku itself stands elegantly in the vast arid landscape....under the blue clear sky and strong sunlight ...

It is worthi visiting!!!
...walking along the huge stone wall, climbing huge stone steps....i could not help imagining how glorious this city was in the past.......

The place is not yet full of tourists....no noise, no people to spoil the ambience....i sunk myself into the serenity while admiring Tiwanaco's magnificence..

I had lunch at a local restuarant nearby...I had fish and tried one bite of llama...(they are too cute to be eaten!!)

“A Must See for Archaeology buffs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2011

Tiwanaku was a large part of why I came to Bolivia, and though they are broke and need funds to complete work there, it was well worth the visit.

This place is still an archeological site and will be for the next 20 years. It is amazing what they have done here. 3500 BCE incredible. Be careful what you book i.e check and make sure that lunch is/isn't included as mine was included and I was charged 30B, I got the money back later. Bring your own drinks to the lunch stop as the lady charges 8B for the small coke that costs1B elsewhere.
