“Nice an neat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

It was a nice hotel, well located and close to the beach. The staff is adorable and the ambience is sober. The only thing we didn't like too much is that our room was too small for 3 people, I think they tried to fit us into a 1 or 2 people room.

I had the opportunity to stay my first two nights in the heart of all the activity in Punta at one of the larger 3 start hotels. We had one more night in Punta and found this little gem. It is located a little further out of the center, near playa mansa, but it was a welcome departure. We'd rented a car, fully aware that it was a bit away so that we could come and go at our leisure and not take expensive, and unavailable taxis.

This place is quaint, charming, quiet in one of the more upscale little neighborhoods. Access to the beach is close. The room was small but that usually isn't problematic for me. Breakfast was good, standard fare but we enjoyed the cleanliness of where we sat and ate breakfast.

I am spoiled by Starwood in most ciies and know that when i venture out of the norm i have to have set different expectations of these out of the way places. Joan Miro was inexpensive, clean beyond my expectations (rooms smelled nice when you walk in - they have a triple inspection policy for a post check-out cleaning), and they were very friendly and cordial. Their internet was reliable, they offered chairs, umbrellas and bikes for the beach - all complimentary.

Very relaxing location and i would strongly recommend

Room Tip: Rent a car.

first day in Uruguay, we were spent from our wedding,
and had not had the time to investigate lodging on the coast.

we popped into Punta del Este's tourist info reservation service. the lady was charming but directed us towards some options that were cheesy, minuscule, etc.

Her third choice was Joan Miro, we were tired, and went to see.

it seemed OK
which it was

78 dollars was the price. which was a little high for low season, but we knew Punta could be expensive.

We had a choice of rooms and chose the biggest.

nothing was bad, except the bed was very worn (the springs sagged).

breakfast buffet was adequate, but... boring

after, we found all manner of great great lodging options in Uruguay, so our first night disappointed us in retrospect.

It was my first visit to Uruguay.
I chose Joan Miro because it was described as a better hotel than others right in the centre. (The hotel is far from centre by walk, so consider taxi rides)

About the hotel: My experience was not the best. We reserved a double bedroom, but they gave us a twin. Also, the bedroom was right in the middle of the breakfast area.
They said they would fix it and give us another room, but at the end of the 5 days nothing happened.

And the Jacuzzi in the garden area was dirty and not working.

Breakfast has the very very basic. The only good point is that lady in the reception is very attencious.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2008

We had only booked accommodation for our first two nights in Punta del Este (The Conrad) as we wanted to see where everything was and then decide if we would continue our stay in the Conrad or move to another location.

We found the Conrad to be a very big, impersonal and overcrowded standard hotel so decided to find a smaller, boutique type, quiet hotel for our last three nights within walking distance to the beach at Playa Mansa.

The hotel described as the Best Western Joan Miro Hotel on an internet hotel booking website seemed to fit the bill.

Upon checking in at the hotel however we first noticed that the hotel is NOT a Best Western. Apparently the hotel has not been a Best Western since May 2008. (Since staying there and before writing this review I have checked a number of websites and all are still listing the hotel as a Best Western so ....be aware).

We then noticed that the Jacuzzi in the garden area was not working...
when asked what the problem was we were told it usually only is available in high season (Jan & Feb) and that nobody had asked about it before...but that they were working on it and it would be working for Christmas...not any good to us....however true to their word it was up and running on our last day - 20th Dec.

The websites also make mention of a hotel bar....well, maybe this also only operates in high season as whilst we were there we saw no sign of it. There is a small bar built in the corner of the breakfast area (which is 4 steps from the reception) but as mentioned there was no sign at all of it ever operating as a bar ie:- a place where you would buy a drink and sit for a chat before heading out for the evening or have a nightcap before an early night.....

Basically this hotel has all the feel of a bed & breakfast - a private house with bedrooms and a shared sitting and breakfast area.

Saying that, the reception and hotel staff are absolutely wonderful. extremely friendly and helpful with no enquiry left unanswered (even if it meant making phonecalls or searching on internet for the answer).

The hotel bedroom (we stayed in a suite with a balcony at the front of the hotel) was cute, a reasonable size (based on European standards so other visitors may find them small), well furnished (comfortable double bed, 2 seater sofa, air-conditioning unit, TV, mini fridge, safety deposit box and the bathroom had a jacuzzi bath).

The 18 rooms are located on the ground and first floor of the building with some having their access doors leading directly into the breakfast area and some are located in the garden area.

There is free wifi in the rooms and for those without laptops there is a PC in the reception area (however not sure if usage charges apply).

Breakfast got a bit boring after the first day (fresh fruit, yoghurt, juice, ham, cheese, bread, pastries and tea or coffee) - even a different type of bread or pastries each day would change it up a bit.

A nice touch is that the hotel supply beach towels, chairs and a parasol. Very handy for the beach which is about 100mts away. There is a small water park and restaurant at the beach (again probably only opened for the high season).

The local bus stop (Parada 11) on the beachfront allows you to travel right into the Peninsula from where you can take a 10 minute ferry ride across to Isla Goretti. The beach here is lovely and less windy than Playa Mansa. (If going outside Jan/Feb probably best to take water and snacks as the beach bar will more than likely be closed.

All in all - the Joan Miro Hotel is a lovely little hotel to stay in when you want to rest, relax and enjoy the quiet side of Punta del Este - which is any month outside Jan or Feb!!
