“Good for Security”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

I (George Cheriyan) stayed at Moevenpick Hotel Sana'a for a conference from March 3-7, 2014. From the security point of view, it is the most high security hotel in Sana’a.

The entry to the hotel took some time, due to multiple level security check at the gate. Due to security, vehicles will stop about 200 mts away from the porch and one need to walk to the lobby. There was no staff available to help me to carry the baggage. There was undue delay at the reception; staff doesn’t seem to be handling the check-in professionally.

Room is big, but the hotel seems to be quite old. The interiors are old fashioned. The WIFI is available on a chargeable basis. Only English channel seems to be CNN on the TV.

There is a large swimming pool on the back side. Conference hall and corridors are quite big and look royal.

Buffet breakfast is diverse. In evening only the pool side Italian style restaurant is open, No liquor is served.

View from the window of the front side room is good, which gives an idea about the barren and hilly Sana’a. From the pool side, down town Sana’a can be seen.

Room Tip: The front side room gives an idea about the barren and hilly Sana'a

I'll try to make it quick, I have been told that Yemen is not safe and has many troubles and security issues. I did expect to have the worst visit. but, after I booked the room online and called the reservation office. Mr. A. Wahad was so friendly and ready to assist, he helped me to calm down and reflected a different vision that made me feel definitely better. then I got to the hotel at 03:00AM I expected the staff are feeling sleepy but, the receptionist Mr. Salah was performing all active and checked me in smoothly.
All staff were doing their best and hard workers and as I told Mr. A. Wahad you have changed my mind about the whole country and this visit will not be the last. by the way he politely refused to take tips for doing many services for my benefit and asked me to tip his team instead as they work harder than him. And that was a very nice gesture shows even in poor countries you may find the hope.
Thank you Movenpick Sanaa team and looking forward to see all of you again.

The building is impressive and the rooms are tastefully appointed. That is where the good things end. TV is a prehistoric version of 18" luxury. The AC in the room wasn't working and upon complain they sent someone, who after fiddling for 40 minutes declared it will start working in 30 minutes and after 3 days still wasn't working. I requested soft pillows and they said "my colleague is bringing them to you". After 2 days I bought one from the market in Sana'a. So much for the 5 star badge. Only one restaurant is available in the night, despite the claims of 3 restaurants and that too has average over priced food.

For a 20 minute airport pick up they charged 50$ despite confirming on the phone that it was free. Upon my insistence they said, please tell the complete name of the employee who confirmed this!

Gym is OK, except that the treadmill stops at its own will and at times when you are running hard, so best to avoid it or use at very low speeds.

Horrible experience overall!

Room Tip: Take room toward the pool side. They tend to be quieter.

The place looks very glamorous from the outside but when I checked in , they didn't have a credit card machine that could work , the AC in the room wasn't working and couldn't be made to cool better despite several visits by under qualified staff
The room furnishing and cleanliness were very good though
The Bar was out of beer and served extremely overpriced spirits and no alcohol room service
There is no way you can get a taxi at the door since there heightened security for an even happening in the hotel. The food was below average and didn't do the nicest hotel in Sanaa any justice.

Oasis of calm - good security, extensive grounds to get some air. 20m indoor pool + larger outdoor pool, sauna, hot tub, tennis, squash, basketball courts etc ... Staff are very friendly and helpful. Only one restaurant choice featuring very mediocre pizza, pasta and 'international menu' - would be much better if they stuck to good Yemeni cuisine ... or at least offered it ...

The movenpick is a strange place and you probably have no choice but to stay here. But if you're coming to Sanaa, it's not bad. The rooms are decent and the service is fine. The main gripe I have is that you can't get Yemeni food anywhere in the hotel. Yemen has great food, but for some reason, management has decided to offer only Lebanese and western fare. I wish they could at least add a dish or two to spice things up.

This is my second time in this hotel and in both occasions it was a pleasant experience. The hotel is fairly new and the rooms and all its facilities are clean and convenient. The gym and spa are great. The staff is friendly and professional. Alcohol is super expensive in this hotel (Yemen is a dry country with very few exceptions in some 5 star hotels) so it is a good idea to buy your drinks from the duty free before you board your flight to Yemen. The hotel is a bit far from the city center but taxis are always available.

Room Tip: The view over old Sanaa is the best one
