If you are looking for a hotel in Abu Dhabi with great beach and pool facilities, then the Hilton is a great choice. With 2 decent sized pools (unshaded by neighbouring buildings), and private beach access with watersports - you couldn't ask for more. These are accessed via an underpass to cross the main Corniche road - at most a 10 minute walk.
However, that's where the positives end. The hotel itself is tired (photos in reception suggest it was first built in the 70's). For a supposed 5 star hotel, the rooms are distinctly average, with the "spectacular view of the gulf" in reality being a 1m wide window. Enamel was chipping off the bathtub, water pressure was poor and with significant temperature fluctuations. Decorative condition was okay, but nothing to write home about.
Although there is wireless access throughout the hotel - in the rooms it is chargeable, and in common areas access is rationed out in 1 hour chunks via access codes from reception. Speed was poor and service availability flaky, and reception staff could not have cared less.
None of these downsides are things which would spoil a holiday, but when you've paid for a 5 start hotel - they leave you with the feeling you could have got a better deal elsewhere.
Staff were generally good, in particular Yesu who gave us some great advice on where to buy good quality saffron - drawing us a map, putting us in a can and making sure the driver knew where to take us.
So all in all - if your priority is beach and pool access, this is a great choice. If you want a real 5 star experience - there are better options available.
