A super smart entrance and lobby and surfeit of welcome staff to greet guests ultimately leave the impression that the hotel is trying a little too hard and in fact failing on many counts. Superb indoor public spaces with the Manhattan Lounge (which bizarrely allows indoor smoking) for drinks, 55th & 5th (hideously overpriced but classy) for steak and the main buffet/breakfast area which sadly is poorly run and has a downmarket package holiday feel which we did not expect from this iconic brand. Each breakfast service was chaotic and on one particularly busy day we witnessed who we subsequently identified as the "acting" GM attempting to get his hands dirty by "assisting" staff, failing spectacularly (a la Basil Fawlty) and then reprimanding staff members in front of guests. Totally unacceptable. Our suite faced the sea and was extremely comfortable with a huge bathroom but a surprisingly limited amount of hanging space considering the size of the suite. St Regis offer a butler service which was very inconsistent despite the very best efforts of individuals. A coffee machine had to be ASKED for, cups were not replaced and dirty glasses also left. Turndown service appeared at 17:45 one day and 22:00 the next! There are five public pools; thankfully an "adults only" (no kids) one with a constant supply of the wrong type of muzak but they all were very busy most of the time. The constant and ever present life guards do a good job at policing and the outdoor staff in general were very very good. Excellent beach with warm turquoise water but the rocks can make it uncomfortable so bring your own "swim shoes". This property would benefit from a Club lounge providing a more luxury service and there is plenty of space to house this. A disappointing first experience with this brand, let's hope the new GM can address the relevant points which let this property down.
