We stayed at the Yas Viceroy from 13th Sept to 18th Sept. On arrival, you cannot fail to be impressed by the building itself. It certainly is iconic and is probably one of the most recognised hotel buildings in the world, up there with the Burj Al Arab. The Reception staff at check-in were quick, polite, efficient and after a long flight it was nice to be handed a cold face cloth to refresh.
We were shown to our spacious room on the 4th floor (room 1436) where we had an unobstructed view over the marina and F1 track. We were near the corner of the building so also had a view of the beach which was a short distance away. As I said, our room had an unobstructed view which we enjoyed, however not every room is like that. Due to the shape of the roof covering the hotel, I would say at least half the rooms if not more, have the glass roof panels in front of the windows. You can of course still see through the glass and framework, but we were glad to have an unobstructed view and use of the balcony which, according to some reviews I've read, some didn't. That said, the rooms are superb and truly 5 star; Ultra modern, fresh and spacious.
The bathroom is excellent, although the two door entrance into it is a little strange.
The corridors are wide and airy and the elevators large and quick.
There are two pools, the larger of the two on the 9th floor which the roof covers has many good quality sun loungers and is more of a "family" pool. If you've got kids, go to this one. We used the smaller pool on the 8th floor which was called the "quiet" pool. This was indeed quiet and used by adults. The service up there from the staff is excellent. The roof is open to the sun and there are plenty of loungers for everyone. I quite liked the aircraft flying low over the pool either taking off or landing. This was mostly in the morning and there were significantly less in the afternoon. Was it noisy? No, as the aircraft noise only lasts about 10 seconds and they're gone, so don't be put off, it's not a problem.
We were on half board so enjoyed breakfast and dinner in Origins restaurant. The breakfasts are very good and caters for all tastes. Origins is a buffet type restaurant, the evening meals give you so much choice, the quality is superb and the service from the well motivated, pleasant and caring staff is a credit to the hotel management. Indeed, I must mention one person in particular (Lak) who on discovering it was my wifes birthday, went out of his way every day to ensure our stay was memorable.
We went to Amici, the Italian restaurant one night and again the quality of the food and service was exemplary. I think the portions could be a little larger though.
The newly opened Skylight bar has an intimate atmosphere and is worth a visit at night.
The lotel provides a free shuttle service to Ferrari World and Yas Central every 38 mins which is well worth the trip. However, both are closed on Mondays. You can still go into Johnny Rockets and see the racing cars at Yas Central on Mondays but they are closed for participation. The same with Ferrari World, you can go into the huge reception area but everything else is closed.
Yas Viceroy is about 20 mins by car from central Abu Dhabi and it costs 70 Dhs each way. Make sure the taxi driver puts the meter on! If shopping is what you want, get a taxi from outside Reception and go to the Marina Mall. A huge shopping centre similar to those in Dubai.
To summarise, this iconic hotel tries very hard to cater for your every need. The staff give excellent customer service and go out of their way to assist. If you like F1 and can afford it, go there, you won't be disappointed. If you don't like F1, go there anyway, you'll have a great time in a wonderful hotel. Can't wait to return!
