“I should have listened to the earlier reviews...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2011

Being an optimist I presumed that the reviews about their booking system wouldn't be a problem for us. How wrong I was...arrived on Monday for 2 nights and our booking was in for Tuesday for 1 night. Thankfully they had another room and while it was not the same type as the room we had reserved it was fine.

Staff, while not rude are not indicative of the friendly hotels experienced elsewhere in Syria.

Overall it's a grand hotel at a grand price. I would be wary about arriving there during high season even with a reservation.

This place used to be great, amazing wonderful and cheap.

Now its dirty run down and has not been ammended in 15 years.

Sadly the staff are atrocious. They are incredibly rude on a personal level. Lazy and unpleasant.

The common toilets are quite vile.

At $2 this place would be a deal. At $30 for a room with no loo..it is well......you decide.

I booked a single room by phone but had to stay in a dorm the first night, which I didn't like because I'm 70, go to bed early, and it was very hot.

Thereafter, I stayed in two different single rooms, which had fans. They are basic, without water, but there are sinks and toilets on each floor, frequently cleaned, and three showers in the basement. The breakfast is typical and acceptable.

Good points for this hostel: the rooms were spacious and had fans; the beds were comfortable; a decent free breakfast is provided; some of the staff are lovely.

Bad points: the shared facilities are rank. I would only recommend staying here if you got a private room. The toilets (2 for the whole hostel on different floors, only one has a basin, that has no soap) are ick and the bins are emptied infrequently so they small. Some of the staff are rude. People can smoke in the covered courtyard outside your room. The fan doesn't really work.

This is the second Lonely Planet recommendation in Damascus that differs wildly from the write-up - have the authors actually visited these places they are recommending?

The hotel in Hotel Al-Haramain is something of a misnomer since the place is more like a youth hostel. But the place is an excellent option for budget travelers.

The hotel is a coverted old Damascene house with a lot of character. A basic breakfast is included in the room price. The rooms are spartan as one would expect in a budget hotel. The reception staff are cheerful and very helpful, and will give travel advice and change money if asked. The hotel centrally located, with the Old City and the bus to al-Soumariyah bus station both short walks away.

In short, the Hotel al-Haramain is a great budget option. I would stay there again if I return to Damascus. But I'll book ahead next time, since the place fills up fast.

Al-Haramain was one of the nicer hotels we stayed in during a trip of 10 days and about 9 different hostels. First, their bathroom was one of the cleanest I saw during my entire trip, which was a huge plus. The hotel itself is a converted house (mansion?) and so our room was right off the inner courtyard and had a very cozy feeling. The hotel was both warm and clean, two other uncommon finds. At about USD 30 a night for a big double with ensuite bathroom, decently priced, especially since breakfast is included in the cost. What's more, the hotel is located in Souq Sarouja, which is popular with other backpackers and has at least 3 other comparable hotels within a 5 minute walk, in case for some reason you can't get a room. The only negative is that because our room was right on the courtyard and the walls are so thin, we could hear EVERYTHING, from people coming in late to the man sweeping the floors at 1AM. Booking in advance would probably help avoid this.
