“The best place to buy Syrian spices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2010

You should visit this market, if you are interested in buying Syrian spices and nuts like pistachio and dried fruits. You have to do your best to get the best price there.

“Step back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2008

The Souq al-Bizuriyyah, or Spice Bazaar, threads it's way between Straight Street and the Azem Palace. The strong scent of spices, together with the beautiful, original architecture of the doorways to Khan Assad Pasha and the Hammam Nur Ad-din adds to the sensation of stepping into another world. It is a daily part of life for locals as well as a tourist attraction and, as it was closed to traffic when I visited, I was able to wander through at a leisurely pace. I loved visiting all the Souqs but this was my favourite, as the surrounding architecture gave such a wonderful sense of history.
As with most buildings in Damascus, the Souq is closed on Fridays. I visited on a Saturday morning and would recommend arriving after 10am - by this time the stalls are set up and you get the full benefit of the aromas of the spices!

“Known as the Spice market.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2008

This market is very close to Hamidiyah and the Omyad Mosque and is a fascinating array of spice and herbs shops. You will find some sweets shops also and there is an old traditional "Hammam" located there which is still in use.
A bit further along in the centre of the Market there is an Arabian Inn called "Khan assad Bashar". It is used mainly for Art exhibitons these days. But it was notably the Inn that Lady Jane Digby stayed in when she first arrived in Damascus in the 1800s.
It is beautifully decorated and well worth a visit for a few minutes out of the bustle of the Souq.
