“Wonderful Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2011

We enjoyed staying at Beit Rose hotel. It offered very intimate and quiet atmosphere. It is a charming Damascene house with fine architectural details. Also, the hotel staff were very helpful and caring giving us tourism advices and providing lots of facilities.

Excellent location, friendly staff but beware of room no. 5. It really is a terrible room.
The location is fine, all sights are easily accessed from there.
The rooftop is nice, but was under construction.

We stayed here for 5 nights during the eid holidays in November 2010. The hotel is small but charming with all you need for a comfortable and pleasant stay in Old Damascus. It is as it says an old Damascene house, situated round a courtyard, so dont expect space and luxury of a modern hotel. Staff are very pleasant and helpful, breakfast was traditional Syrian, which set you up for the day.

Overall a very good hotel, only negative comment would be that in room 4 you hear the roof top water pump coming on during the night, if you are a sensitive sleeper it will waken you frequently.

We booked into this hotel at the last minute after leaving the terrible hotel we were booked into by our tour organiser. We had the suite and it was delightful. The view from the roof is fantastic.

The Beit Rose hotel is nicely placed near old towns via recta and many big attractions are well within walking distance. The hotel itself is rather small, being an old home, and our room consisted of a large bed and some space to walk around it. The bathroom was nice but had an unpleasing smell and the room itself smelt a bit dusty as curtains, ornaments etc had a layer of it. The tv was small and set in a corner but had some english speaking channels.
The hotel has a wifi that suffer a bit in covering the whole hotel but is enough for some surfing.
Now the breakfast is always the same although it varies in the small, ie if you get a pot of tea or just warm water in your tea cup and one bag. The croissants were often over
heated and petrified after only minutes and the olive oil on some of the dishes sometimes had a stale taste. After a while we found out that orange juice is avaliable upon request. That said, the breakfast is plentifull and will leave you ready for sight seeing.
The room is cleaned every day (change of sheets, towels and such) and two water bottles / day is provided. Note that the water in the bottles you can buy everywhere is the same mountain spring-water thats in the taps. We had water from the taps without any problems.
The roof terrace is nice in the evenings, its no problem to bring food with you or some wine for a relaxing evening. Wine and other alcohols can be found in several shops around bab touma and a nice bottle of wine is often around 250 SYP. (there is also a few bars and nightclubs, some directly on via recta)

there is lots of traffic in old damascus and cars can drive right up to the hotel door so its no problem to take a cab at the airport for half the price the hotel offers, they were open at night also.
(and take precausion when walking in old damascus as drivers will try to take big cars down narrow, winding roads (without side walks or lights) as fast as they can)
We also saw plenty of ATM machines near the hotel so you dont have to bring it all in cash.

The staff at the hotel is always pleasent and eager to help. they will draw you maps, point out the best places to eat or shop and assist you in your travels to sights like crac du chevalier.
As the driver on the trips spoke little english you might want to try out some of the other places offering tours but check the prices first.

in all we had a pleasent trip, damascus is a great town with amazing culture, some of the best foods with a worldwide range, a wide range of shopping (all from paris hilton handbags or designer gear to traditional candy, lots of hearb and natural minerals medicine and perfume shops that tailor the scent just for you) and friendly people.
The food itself is cheap and you can get a fantastic meal for often less than a third of the price at home.

The hotel itself was perhaps not exaclty what we expected but its the staff that made the impression that much better as they always seemed genuinly happy to see you.

Beit Rose is a really nice hotel - small, pretty, conveniently located. Rooms are pleasant, with efficient air-conditioning; shower is all right. Breakfast is good, made better by the courtyard. Staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful, organising taxis, answering questions, and so on. It's perhaps charging at the top-end, but still makes for good value.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Beit Rose is a traditional Damascusine house of the eighteenth century that has been restored recently over a two year period with a delicate attention to preserve its authentic style; however very fine details were changed in an attempt to add a unique charm. The house is located in the heart of old Damascus, just few steps away from the Mostakem street (straight street) that dates back to the Romanian era. Therefore it's the ideal gateway for exploring the history, browsing surrounding area of interest and enjoying the sensational experience of the Syrian cuisine in the abundant nearby restaurants; many quiet bars are offering a chilling environment nearby. Each room is provided with air condition, heater, a small fridge, TV, international phone line and also wireless internet. Our breakfast is a combination between a continental and traditional Famascusine one and it's served for all our guests free of charge. We provide meals from our kitchen (is located out of the hotel). We do have a breezy specialized cocktail menu (served all day long). The Beit Rose's friendly staff go out of their way to make your stay an enjoyable experience. ... more   less
