The TripAdvisor Doha restaurant reviews have matured in these past few years. A few years ago, the reviews were indifferent, of insignificant places and not worth reading. At least now the restaurants that have made into the top 10 arguably merit their placing. I am glad that Yum Yum, has zoomed up from nowhere to take the No1 spot. Neither I nor my friends, who have been in Doha for a few years, had heard of the Yum Yum or the K108 as this is an independent hotel with a still low profile.
The K108 is in the old part of town and certainly where it’s difficult to find a parking space. I drove up to the entrance to drop my friends first as we were running late, but the friendly hotel doormen said that they valet park the cars for free. Inside more greetings from the reception staff who pointed us to the elevator lobby.
The menu is limited. To me this is not a problem as I prefer something fresh, precisely cooked rather than a huge list. I started with shrimps on spaghetti. Three large shrimps (they could be called prawns) cooked separately and placed on top of the spaghetti. Char-grilled on the outside, fatty and juicy on the inside and bursting with flavour. The basil sauced spaghetti though was a little lacking intensity and a bit watery. The beef, that I ordered medium rare, was also char-grilled, with a crust on the outside and blood red on the inside, served with a smooth pomme puree, glazed carrots and a wonderful jus. Just a shame that the portions are small. My meat portion was tiny and smaller than my neighbours’ whom I stared enviously. I rounded off with a fruit tart and ice cream. The ice cream very flavourful with a hint of cardamom. I would have preferred the base to be a chewy crumb pastry, but on that night it was served on a few sheets of filo that did not provide much bite to a hungry diner. Overall though it was very good food and certainly one of the best value for money places in Doha.
