“Enjoyable Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

Have to say after reading some reviews we thought about switching hotels but I'm glad we didn't in the end

Some reviewers mentioned about extra charges but when we came to check out our bill was in perfect order , the (free) airport transfers were indeed free and we weren't charged for any extra bedding in the rooms for the children

There is a smell of smoke as you walk in the lobby but I don't believe you will avoid that anywhere in Doha and to be honest I thought the fans did a good job of removing it , it was certainly not a problem during our stay ... I didn't notice any drain type aromas that others have mentioned at all during our stay

Pool area was clean and looked after , a few loose tiles here and there but there are plans to renovate it and insert a slide and move the child pool as I understood it

Rooms were fine , again I didn't see any evidence of them being old , other than intentionally as that is the look / style the hotel are going for , the room certainly have more character than something like a modern and sterile Hilton ... you need a few hours or an 8 year old child to work out how to use the light switches though :-)

The sea was murky due to it mainly being mud on the sea floor ..and the bay contained very few fish , but we went out to the inland sea where the water was crystal clear ..and still didn't see any fish so if you want snorkelling maybe head to the Maldives instead :-) ... with the current building plans for Qatar (250+ 5 star hotels and 7 , 7 Star hotels ) there is a lot of building work going on 24 x 7 but it wasn't loud enough to keep anyone awake or disturb you by the pool ... the planes do sometimes come over the hotel at 2am but I think you'd get that at any hotel at that end of town until they open the new airport

Amusingly we all got locked out of our rooms after the New Year party had finished due to a computer glitch , but even that didn't spoil the night and the kids had great fun showing off to the other people waiting on the floor

Club rooms would be my recommendation , Happy hour between 18:00 and 20:00 means free alcohol (it's about £8 a beer in the hotel ) , but they also have nibbles and soft drinks all through the day , to the point that some days we didn't need to bother going out to eat ... we had 2 rooms and 951 was far bigger than the other room we had , so try and request it when checking in if you can :-)

We'd go back , for me Qatar has more charm than Dubai ( though that may change once they have built the aforementioned hotels ) and as a tourist the fact you are left along to wander about the place is a godsend , even in the Souk you are left alone ...

The Corniche is just around the corner from the hotel and you can go for a pleasant night time walk with the children and play in the playground ..or the city Mall is a 10 - 15 walk away

Taxi's we never got one to put the meter on , there is a sign in the back that says your journey is free if it isn't active but good luck with that one .... I'd say anything around 20 to 25 riyal to go the Souk is about average ... I think on the meter someone told me it would be around 15 - 16 so they aren't ripping you off by huge amounts

Room Tip: Looking at the fire plan , room 951 was largest room on that floor

The down side of this stay was the Starwood guests discount. When checking in you show your rewards card and ASSUME you are eligible for the discounts provided in the hotel. This is not the case as we found out on checking out. The management washed their hands of any discount that should be applied as we hadnt shown our rewards card at any of the restaurant outlets. There is nowhere in the hotel to say you have to produce your card and none of the staff ask for it either. This obviously left us very disappointed and put rather a dampener on the whole holiday. I would have expected that the management would at least honor any of the privileges that the starwood guests are allowed.
All in all this hotel has eveything you could want. Ideally situated on the beach the location is probably the best in Doha. All the restaurants are equally as good as each other and the food cannot be faulted. We particularly ate in the Italian restaurant mostly as we like italian food and must say they were so helpful, friendly and welcoming. We were there for christmas and new year and can only say they did their utmost to accomodate all tastes. Decorations and entertainment were very good. All the staff are polite and friendly and make you feel at home and cant do enough to help.

I visited Sheraton few days back and the structure is very interesting. I visited the buffet area, not very much interesting, but staffs are very friendly. I had a couple of drinks at a Latin bar. The place is very cozy and has a good feeling to it. Band is very very entertaining, the other guests dancing are really into it. Will definitely come back here!

I stayed here for 2 nights in a club room for a short layover trip on the way to Europe. Some points about the hotel:

Location - It is in an excellent location on the water and in downtown Doha. Because it is centrally located, I could walk down the Corniche or into downtown. It is about a 10 minute taxi ride to the souq and Islamic museum, and about 15-20 minutes to the airport depending on traffic. Overall I think it is one of the best centrally located hotels in Doha.

Rooms - Rooms were very comfortable and maintained. No issues.

Staff and Service - All were very friendly and accommodating.

Ambiance - As other reviews stated, this is an older hotel and the property shows its age. It is kind of like stepping back in time 10-20 years and experiencing what used to be the premier hotel in Doha. While the hotel is dated, it has been maintained well. While I think the hotel could probably be gutted and refurbished from top to bottom, it was still comfortable. I liked the fact that there was a good amount of public spaces and outdoor spaces to include a large pool and beach area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the harbor.

I've stayed at Sheraton Doha this December. The hotel has good services and good room facilities. The room was clean and quiet although outside on the town side there was a big construction parking site.
The hotel is from the first generation of hotels in Doha and you can smell it each time when you enter into the hotel. After a while, you got used to the smell and cannot detect it unless you are very sensitive.
It has, however, a nice beach, which is good when you want to combine business with pleasure. The spa is poor, it has an old smelly sauna and old unfunctionable showers.
I would not recommend Doha itself as a tourist vacation destination.

Room Tip: Beach view, otherwise excavation park view

I assume during its years this hotel is a revered landmark of the Doha skyline. This pyramid like structure stands solitary against the backdrop of recently built modern skyscrapers, which actually ages the Sheraton somewhat. The hotel is not bad, I have been in better Sheratons, but this is not to say Sheraton Doha is bad either. It is shall I say an acquired taste. For me it fulfilled its purpose. The rooms are cosy, though I found the steps from my bed to the workdesk and verandah a tad hazardous, there were occasions I had to recover from being wrong footed. A disappointment is the lack of a dedicated wireless coverage. Any need for the internet is satisfied going to the ground lobby to get a signal. In terms of architectural design, the sense of being in a pyramid with indoor verandahs is a nice change. I particularly liked the see through elevators. Location wise, the hotel is not in the proximity of shopping centres but a big plus is it's along the beautiful Doha waterfront. Fresh seabreeze air early in the morning, followed by a good selection of breakfast offerings. Overall, it is a Sheraton experience.

We had booked from November 1 to 6, knowing that we would arrive with an early morning flight on November 2. Check-in went relatively smooth and we were suddenly given our room, including an upgrade to a club floor room. The rooms are not new, but in good shape, so no problem about this one.
Getting a taxi is a nightmare. Actually they try to sell their hotel cars which cost three times the fare of a "normal" taxi. If you ask the bellhop to call a taxi, you will get a hotel car. Full stop. They will not call a normal taxi for you. You have two chances: in times of high guest turnover, wait for the next taxi in arrival and contact the driver directly. Or you go for the short walk down to the Corniche road and stop a taxi there. From a safety point of view, crossing the Corniche road is a nightmare (no pedestrian bridge, subway or traffic lights). Therefore unfortunately it is advisable to use taxis instead of walking even for short distances.
The hotel's biggest asset - being the oldest one in town - is their garden: with grown-up trees giving shadow, palm trees and the most amazing concert of birds. However, the equipment of their beach club dates back to the 1970's and is in desparate need of replacement: old shabby pool restaurant (if you enjoy Greek salad with Thousand Island sauce - then it is for you!), sun loungers in beginning state of decomposition, practically inexistent beach service (you have to ask for umbrellas!)... really a pity.
At check-out, we were charged an additional night due to our "early check-in" as well as the breakfast for the two of us on the first day, even though our reservation had started the evening before! This is far from correct and professional, because most charges are hidden between abbreviations on the invoice and you can hardly trace them. It took us lots of discussions to get that right and the correction took ages. I think this is the tactic behind - they hope for people that are in a hurry to rush to the airport and that will not discuss about these charges! Also, the clerk at check-in gave us a room without even telling us that this might lead to further charges... So reception service is definitely a no-go.
