“Not up to the standard of other hotels”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2012

We stayed as a family (5 adults) in the Intercon Doha for a week whilst visiting my brother. It was a very mixed experience. The standard of the rooms is good and the breakfast was very good - well worth having this included in your stay. It is very manic on a Friday and Saturday, but a nice experience during the week.

On the downside, the reception staff were incredibly unhelpful and rude during check in - they charged us more than the price when we booked - as were the bar staff when we tried to return unopen drinks that we had not ordered - it was a real battle to get a refund. The staff were generally rude and uninterested e.g. being ignored at receptions and bars for AGES.

The most disappointing thing about this hotel was the spa and sports facilities. The gym is very good -immaculate, good equipment etc - but everything else was not great. The spa is small and grotty, and completely incomparable to the Hyatt and the Four Seasons. We rarely stay in expensive hotels so are not hard to please, but the spa really is bad. Also, they claim to have Tennis courts for guests but when we tried to book them the day we arrived, they only had a one hour slot each day at 1pm for the whole week we were there. Clearly the tennis courts are kept for the leisure club members, so saying they are avaliable for hotel guests is inaccurate. We totally understand that you need to book them, but they need to hold a few more slots for hotel guests.

The restaurants are good - Paloma's happy hour is great value and the food at the Greek restaurant was excellent. The Belgian bar is good for drinks - the food is highly rated but we couldn't ever get a table there. Service from the pool bars was, however, dreadful, especially over the weekend and the food we had by the pool and in the hotel bar was stone cold. Stick to the themed restaurants and avoid this food. For the restaurants, you need to book at least a day in advance as they are always full and no priority is given to hotel guests.

I think the main problem with this hotel is that the facilities would be sufficient if they were just for hotel guests but with so many outside leisure club users, it is seriously over capacity at the weekend and on Ladies Day - limited sunbeds, bad service etc It all felt very chaotic and not "special" in any way.

The concierge service is also not 4/5 star standard at all. We asked them if they could look into waterskiing for us and they just were not able to help - there was a Fawlty Towers-esque scene of a porter posing as the concierge (although he was actually trying to be helpful, he just didn't know what to do) followed by a Concierge who took a whole day to look in to it. All just really inefficient.

We have stayed in the Four Seasons and went for drinks in the Hyatt, and for a similar price, they both have that special luxurious feel that the Intercon lacked. The service at the Four Seasons is absolutely perfect. We are not fussy people at all - like I say, we rarely stay in expensive hotels - but it just didn't feel like you were getting a good experience for your money. I appreciate not many people "holiday" in Doha so I am sure this hotel would be fine for many people, but if you will be spending a fair amount of time in the hotel, you could do a lot better than the Intercon.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the InterCon, local women can enjoy the lavish pool and beach areas for just 50 QR for the entire day. Come early to claim your chaise lounge on the beach under the shade of a tiki umbrella. Friendly waiters serve you iced coffees and water as you while the morning away alongside the aquamarine gulf waters.

Note: There is a decent menu of light fare when all that sunning and lounging piques your appetite. The bar also makes the best mojito in Doha.

Tip: The pool and beach area open at 7 am. Arrive by 9 am to ensure a good spot. Towels are provided and you can shower on-site before leaving.

I stayed to Intercontinental for 5 nights at the residence suites. The hotel was in a very good location. You can use the shutlle bus of the hotel to go anywhere. (Don't miss the museum of the islamic art-what a building! and the souk Waqif)The pool was fantastic(it was also a small pool for the babies) and the hotel was very clean. The staff was friendly and helpfull. The bar Mykonos was great with nice drinks and dinner. At the evening you could also take your drink beside the sea, at a small bar there. I enjoyed my sleep at the maximum, because the quality of the matrres and the pillows was great. Also my room was big and comfortable. Near the hotel is the Katara cultural village. Its a nice place for walk during the evening with a lot of restaurants and cafe'. I recomment this hotel for sure!

Stayed here for 5 nights for a business trip. Staff were universally very accomodating and friendly and the bedroom was spacious and clean. Overall not quite at the top of 5 star standards as some of the fxtures and fittings were slightly cheap however overall a pleasant experience. We tried the Cafe restaurant (buffet and very ordinary), Paloma (Tex Mex with good food but unbelievably dark), Mykonos (mediterranean and excellent) and the Belgian Cafe (lively, sometimes too much so). Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again although having visited the Grand Hyatt to go to one of their restaurants the overall impression there was more luxurious.

Found a great little bar this weekend at the Inter-conti. The poolside bar is excellent and right on the beach. Great place to relax and grab a cold drink. Shuts at 10 though, but then you can always head inside to the Belgian bar and try some odd-tasting Belgian Beer. Pretty cool atmosphere all round here.

THE INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL, DOHA, QATAR.

I stayed in this hotel for six nights 31st March to 5th April 2012 with my family for our Easter holiday.

I had previously stayed at this hotel in November 2006. The hotel is located in the West Lagoon Bay area of Doha. It is about a 20 minute drive from Doha International Airport. I had arranged to use the hotel “limousine” service. The car was a BMW 5 series model. The cost was Qatari Riyal QAR 140 (equivalent to GBP25 – April 2012) from the airport to the hotel.

We arrived in the hotel after midnight. The main lobby of the hotel is beautiful, spacious and tastefully decorated. The check in procedure was quick. Our “room” (number 522) was in fact a suite located on the 5th floor overlooking the swimming pool and the beach. The room had an adjoining lounge/dining- room in which they placed small beds for my children. This was ideal as the kids could do their own thing. Our room was large. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. I wish all hotels in the world had such comfortable beds and pillows. The room was beautifully decorated and the lighting was just right. The bathroom was larger than I thought and had all the mod cons expected of five star hotels.

Breakfast was at “The Café” located on the ground floor. You could sit inside or outside on the terrace by the swimming pool. (At the time of our visit, there were renovation works taking place in the main restaurant – so the breakfast area had been sectioned off with partitioning. But this has been done in such a way that you did not realize it.) There was a wide variety of buffet style food available. I liked the warm “cinnamon buns” which were absolutely delicious.

There is a separate pool for kids by the main pool area. This has a roof to avoid the hot sun. The main swimming pool itself is large. Even if there are a lot of swimmers, you do not feel crowded in. There are palm trees by the main pool area – so there is natural shade - but parasols are available if you prefer.

The beach area is about fifteen metres from the pool area. From here you get a nice view of Doha’s skyline. Since the beach is set in a lagoon, there are no waves that crash on to the beach. Various water sports are available, but I did not use any of these.

There is a well equipped fitness centre on the ground floor overlooking the pool area; and a business centre. There is an Intercontinental Club open to members on the sixth floor for drinks and canapés.

The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle bus service at regular intervals to the city centre; the Souk Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art and to Doha International Airport. There is no need to book in advance. They say that you should be in the lobby about five minutes before the scheduled leaving time.

A ten minute walk from the hotel is the “Katara” – a cultural village which has some nice restaurants.

I would recommend this hotel for family holidays; couples; honeymooners; and business people. Our kids loved it. All staff members were helpful, polite and friendly. The hotel management gave us a complimentary chocolate cake for one of my kid’s birthday, which was a nice gesture.

MAZ MANNAN 21st April 2012.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor room facing the beach for excellent view of Doha's skyline
