“A modern hotel in the beautifully preserved old souk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013 via mobile

We thought this boutique hotel was so good to stay at during a stopover between Melbourne and Europe that we booked it again for a stopover on the return trip.  It is located in one corner of the Souq Waqif, the beautifully preserved and restored old covered souk that now boasts many modern cafes and restaurants as well as the traditional shops of all kinds.  The  hotel is new and modern in every respect and is not really boutique in the sense of being small.  The lobby is large and the bedrooms and bathrooms are of an ample size.  If anything, the air-conditioning is too effective!  Breakfast is excellent.  A real plus for us was the 15m roof-top pool.  Being in the souk, alcohol is not served for which you take a taxi up the Corniche to one of the international hotels in the new city.  On the other hand the magnificent I M Pei designed Museum of Islamic Art is within walking distance.

We stayed at the Al Mirqab for 2 nights in August and were delighted with our choice. The hotel is beautiful with many Arabic touches and the pool is really delightful, in a courtyard setting, immaculately clean and cooled to a very pleasant temperature. It made a great place to cool off and relax in the fierce August heat and on each of the three occasions that we used the pool (including 11.30pm after a hot evening out) we had exclusive use of it. Apparently it is heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. Certainly it was delightful during our visit.
The service was fabulous especially from the acting duty manager during our stay (Anikesh), who was outstanding. We did have a problem getting to the hotel as they didn't answer our emails enquiring about a pickup from the airport and our taxi driver couldn't find it and was very rude. However, Anikesh went out of his way to put things right for us and to make sure we had no further problems during our stay. I would definitely recommend getting a pickup though as he was not the only taxi driver driving us who didn't know where it was.
The best thing about the hotel though was the location on the edge of the Souq Waqif. There is plenty to look around here and there are loads of restaurants and cafes. Most of the hotels in Doha are some way away from the old town and the Al Mirqab really is ideally located for exploring the souq especially since you can do it a little at a time and go back to the hotel for a cool off before heading out again. The hotel pool is ideal for this, beautifully situated in a courtyard setting and a fabulous way to recoup in between sightseeing. None of the hotels in the old town serve alcohol but we felt this was more than compensated for by the fabulous location. That said, if you're looking for the beach, then you're better off on the Corniche, but I'd say the old part of town has a lot more to offer.

All in all, thoroughly recommended. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if I'm in Doha.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking part of the souk and there was really no noise at all.

Dear Valued Guest,

Warm Greetings from Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels Doha!

We thank you for your comments and feedback in trip advisor! it was indeed our pleasure to be at your service and to have you stay with us we are all glad to hear from you and happy to know you had great time with us. Anikesh is a star and his efforts to blow away all our guest is much appreciated and valuable to us. i personally love the souq and just cant get enough of it and there is always something to see may be the different colorful birds and pets to the local policemen entertaining the crowds with their elegant horse or camel rides within the souq.

We thank you once again for choosing us to stay and look forward to welcome you back soon!

We decided to spend three nights at the boutique hotel in Souq Waqif. Our rooms, first 311 and then 210, overlooked a souq street. The room was very quiet during the day. The souq gets busy at night at in the evenings there is a band playing outside on the terrace so we fell to sleep to the pleasant sounds of their music.

Our room was spacious, with high ceiling and well appointed with an Arabic flavour. Large comfortable beds, night tables, long desk and chair, two lounge chairs, TV, mini bar, the cupboards had plenty of handing and shelving space and a safe. Modern controls for lighting and air conditioning, which take a few minutes to sort out (step one, dig out glasses…). The windows open, there are block out curtains, decorating curtains and sliding cloth doors. There was a hum in our first room, so we were changed after mentioning it to reception.

The bathroom (shower) is spacious with generous space for putting your things, hair dryer and nice amenities. Large towels, bathrobes and slippers are also provided.

Buffet breakfast is on the main floor. There is a nice selection of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, vegetables, cold cuts, some hot dishes, breads, and pastries with juice, coffee brought to the table on order. Omelettes were offered but we did not try these.

It was different to be able to stroll the souq in the evening (40 degrees during the day) when locals were also present and were in the majority. The reconstructed souq has many shops (household items, pets, jewellery, art, souvenirs and handicrafts) and restaurants. We enjoyed dinner on the terrace and also relaxing on the lounge chairs with a mint lemonade just watching the comings and goings.

It is located very near the excellent Museum of Islamic Art and it is an inexpensive taxi drive to most places in Doha.

We recommend this hotel for comfort and the interesting location.

I recently spent a night at the Al Mirqab hotel and enjoyed every second of it. First, its located just on the edge of the Souq Waqif. The Souq is a large sprawling shopping area dating back centuries. It was originally where people would come to meet to trade wool, spices and the like. Prime real estate for westerners wanted a different experience. The hotel itself is quite nice, very clean, large spacious rooms, plenty of amenities . A friendly courteous staff at check in and check out. But, again, the chance to stroll the the Souq and check out the vendors selling everything from gold to parrots, there was nearly everything available . The sights, the sounds, the smells all very enticing ! MY travel companion and I find a little Lebanese restaurant and shared a great meal . We were also luck enough to find ourselves there during the spring festival. It was a great spectacle.. live local music, jugglers, stilt walkers .
2 notes that do not detract from the hotel at all are, it can be very difficult to get a cab in the early morning hours. I had a 8 am departure and it took about 30 minutes to get a cab. Second, make sure your cab drops you off or can tell you exactly how to find the hotel. Traffic was very heavy as the festival was going on when I arrived and the cab driver said its just around the corner. If you dont know your way, the Souq can be quite a maze to wonder through. It took about 30 minutes to find the hotel. Great stay non the less.

Great atmosphere inside the hotel, nice and really luxury inhouse pool, catering especially the breakfast was fantastic. The main feature of the hotel is the location, it is situated in heart of the traditional part of Doha, the market called Souq Waif. If you wanna see a nice Arabic boutigue hotel with a stylish interior design it is a right choice.
We traveled with kid and unfortunately the staff was not able to handle it - there was no extra-bed in the hotel thanks to the fully booked period. Several complains and finally they could mange it, but until we had to sleep in one bed. Aside from this it is a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: If you traveling with kids be sure to update the staff about this. Ask a room which is facing to the...

I had booked another hotel within this group of boutique hotels, Al Najada, but my reservation was cancelled at the last minute and we were shifted to an upgraded room in Al Mirqab. So I arrived feeling a tad miffed but nevertheless wanting to move on and enjoy our trip. Like Al Najada, this hotel is small and located within Souk Waqif and the reason I chose these hotels was to get a more personal experience and a very different flavour to the skyscraper and resort style chain hotels that proliferate in Doha. It was fantastic to be located in the Souk as the area is a riot of activity and colour and there are numerous bars and restaurants on the doorstep. Reception staff were efficient and the room was pleasant with a good outlook over the Souk and the Doha skyline. The bathroom was plush but disappointingly had no bath. The inclusive breakfast was a nice little continental spread and staff once again were very good. A nice place to stay.
