The reservation. A big thank you to the hotel for finding me a room at the last minute after the room I had booked elsewhere fell through. Top marks. That’s the way to win clients!
The reception. Excellent! I really and objectively appreciated the personal touch the receptionist gave the check-in, while assuring an efficient service, such a change from the Hotel I stayed in, in Dubai, before coming to Qatar. First impressions are lasting and the receptionist scored top marks.
The room (#503). Spacious and in accordance with the standing. The bed was very comfortable, the room’s coffee making facility extremely appreciated for a 4 AM check out and the bathroom impeccable. Wifi easy to access and use. Top marks!
Restaurant “The Cellar”. Less than Total Customer Experience. Knowing that the value for money of hotel restaurants is a long standing debate I had wanted to eat out and could even see the airport’s food centre from the hotel entrance. However seeing that there was no direct beeline route to the food centre, plus it was windy and raining (in Qatar!?) I decided to see what the hotel had to offer and I eventually found myself sitting in the non smoking area of the Hotel’s “The Cellar” wine bar restaurant.
While the service was impeccable and the glass of Vapollicella pleasant, the Lamb Kebab I ordered was a disappointment. It was the first time I have eaten a Kebab made of minced meat, plus it was dry that the little ramequins of white sauce, concassé of olives and tomatoes did nothing to alleviate, also a little salad to brighten up the dish would have been appreciated.
Another thing that made the eating experience a little less than excellent was the fact that I was sitting facing the kitchen pass. Now I have nothing against that because it can provide some entertainment while you wait for your dish (for having worked a long time in hotels I know how chefs “interact” with service personnel) but I could have don’t without one Germanic accented European chef remonstrating a server for waiting for the food because, perhaps, it was a long time coming.
As for me. Having only had just an airport sandwich in the morning to keep me going I was famished and I finished the 4 mini burger lamb kebabs in less time than it took to prepare them. Fortunately there was the bread basket and a chocolate bar in the room’s mini bar.
Checkout and shuttle bus. The check-out was discreet and efficient. The shuttle bus appreciated, shame you can’t access the airport on foot as apparently you used to be able to do but that’s not the hotels fault.
All in all I give the hotel 9/10, an unexpected and enjoyable first time experience at the Oryx Rotana Hotel Doha and one I hope to renew
