Barbar is the quintessential no frills authentic Beiruti street food experience. I still remember when Barbar was a tiny bakery in the 90s that served incredible manouche and lovely sambousiks. Since then the place has evolved into what can only be described as a food empire, occupying several stores with various specialties all of which open to one common and simple dinning area.
Being a 24 hour restaurant means you can have incredible shawarmas at 5am after a lovely night of partying in the nearby pubs and clubs dotted around Hamra. It also means that this was a place I frequented often during my days as a student at AUB and it therefore occupies a particularly special place in my memories.
That alone warrants it 5 stars, but Barbar is much more than that, it is a staple of the Beiruti landscape, people now refer to entire area as 'Barbar'!
More importantly though, the food is always top notch, and when it is not (very rarely) you can tell them and they are always more than happy to send it back and give you another dish.
Value wise, I have to say the place did increase its prices since my days as a student considerably, but it is still considered a rather cheap experience, particularly for families and parties larger than 2 people.
Pay it a visit after a lovely shopping outing on Hamra!
