“Gulf was Good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2006

The Gulf Hotel lobby gives you the feel of an upscale hotel (even though it is a bit gaudy). The floors are waxed to perfection and the restaurants and salon services are abundant. The room is the basic hotel room with nice sized bathroom, but not very hot water. 2 water bottles daily, turn down service, great view, bad TV stations (bad TV at the Diplomat too), doorbells for each room, close to swarma alley restaurants and stores, pretty landscaping, decent customer service. I thought it was very nice, but not particularly impressive until I stayed at the Diplomat, then I wished I was back at the Gulf. I'd go back. Jazzzione.

I have stayed at the Gulf Hotel on a number of occasions over the years and I would endorse the opinion of the last reviewer that it has lost its edge.

Standards have declined and though there is a core of world-class staff the hotel has also recruited personnel who are unsuited to the service industry.

The last correspondent is correct in that most taxis have disconnected meters and seek a BD fare of at least 7 dinars.

The Gulf hotel is well located close to shops and other restaurants. The rooms are spacious and clean. The pool facility and fitness areas are well maintained. Excellent restaurants and a scruffy unappealing bar called Sherlock Holmes. I have stayed at the hotel six times, mainly on the executive floors. This time standards had dropped and inoperative dirty fridge greeted me on check-in. I advised the pleasant Egyption receptionist, who assured me it would be seen to promptly. The following day it was still not fixed. Bed side light didn't work and wasn't fixed. Cotton buds not replenished. Considering the room charge in 75 Bahraini Dinars plus service charges/tax the standards have dropped. Bahrain is an expensive venue for accommodation, so if premier Hotels like the Gulf is beginning to lose its edge business travellers might be tempted to choose UAE or at least an alternative hotel that offers better value for money. Beware of taxi drivers. The taxi driver would not use a meter from the hotel to the airport and charged me 7 BD the correct fee should have been 3 BD. Refuse to use a taxi without a meter.

The Gulf Hotel is one of the biggest in Bahrain and certainly, one of the glitziest. The lobby is full of glittering chandeliers and acres of shining marble floors. Every night a man spent hours polishing all the floors, and it showed. There are eight restaurants in the hotel, most any type of ethnic food you could want, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Italian, etc. Best fun was the Sherlock Holmes bar, which is a very traditional English pub, with typical pub grub menu, a surprise in such an upmarket hotel. Service was generally good and the Lebanese dinner cabaret is a great night out.

The Gulf Hotel is a great hotel. The pool area is the highlight with a play area for kids separate from the main pool. The compound is fully enclosed by a wall and it has a tropical feel with palm trees and nice landscaping. There are several themed restaurants that offer a variety of cuisine. The rooms are large but the pink toilets & tubs along with dark paneling and mirrors in the hallways really need updating.

Great Hotel with lots going on.

Pool area was renovated recently and offers a nice relaxing area - with a seperate kids and family area away from the main pool area. Thai restaurant overlooks pool and give's outdoor area a Thai feel.

Loads of restaurants in hotels - spoilt for choice. Sherlock Holmes Bar is great and full of expats with live music.

Rooms were large and comfortable.

Hotel is great for both business and leisure travellers.

Staff were really friendly and went out of their way - late check out was offered at 8pm - which is very reasonable...
