“first time in Austrian Hospice”

I was reading the previous reviews and was quite concerned with the service level and staff attitude, to be honest :)

BUT I was surprised for good! Everything was great! VERY GOOD service, friendly and helpful.
The breakfast was just fine and the dorm was very good. I have travelled in many countries, and seen many hostels, but never seen the personal locker in the dorm, really!

The call for muslim prayer is very loud at 3.30.am indeed, even in dorms it will wake you up for sure, but i actually LIKED IT.

The funny thing is i was disappointed by the only thing i DID have expectations for which is the famous Apple shtrudel :)

But i can surely handle that one
RECOMMENDED PLACE TO STAY FOR EVERYONE.

Walk in off the busy, crowded streets of Jerusalem and you enter a different world...roomy, peaceful, amazing! My room was huge, with a lovely large painting on the wall. It is a beautiful old building with wide halls and staircases, a large room to freely use their computer, an excellent breakfast (included), and a limited but great restaurant (for other meals) that spills out onto a patio that has lots of trees and birds. This is a great place for relaxation after long and full days tromping all over Jerusalem.

The location is unbeatable: 14th (or so..) century builing in the middle of Jerusalem's old city. It is a quiet place with a lovely garden and a roof top from where you can overlook Jerusalem. Inside the Hospice is a autrian coffeeshop where traditional autrian food is served. The small chapel inside is also a highlight, rooms are quiet big and very clean. It ist not cheap but you stay in a veritable oasis. There are also dormatories when you need to save money. The only point I criticize is that for breakfast the staff assigns the guest to a table. I went there with my boyfriend and we wanted to sit together which was not possible althought only two tables were taken. The 10 other tables were "reserved". So, we had breakfast elsewhere.
However, I would absolutly go there again and recommand it highly to my freinds, especially because of the Harry Potter atmosphere :)

This hotel was lovely- of much higher quality than the hostels I had been staying in previously! It's best feature is that it's within the walls- you can start the Via De La Rosa from just around the corner. I stayed in a dorm room which was big and clean, and secure with individual lockers for each guest. The hotel has a roof terrace, although only one bench up there, and a lovely garden where you can drink a few German beers in the evening. I actually found the staff to be quite friendly once I struck up a conversation with them. The breakfast was lovely. I would recommend this hotel to anyone that wants to stay within the Old City- it is in the centre of the shooping alleys in the Muslim Quarter, as well as near a gate for easy access to the rest of the city.

This hostel is very close to the Western Wall and many religious sites. Bunk bed accomodation in dorms but rooms are secure. A nice garden with bar facities and also a view of Jerusalem from rooftop!! overall facilites very good for price, and the budget traveller would do well to find better in jerusalem.

The hospice is excellently located, and the architecture beautiful. We did not mind the spartan rooms; there was something modest and refreshing in the bare high white ceilings. The hotel is not as clean as it should be, you cannot take out a glass of water to the garden and patio tables unless you order coffee, you must pay hotel bills in cash and you cannot have breakfast in the beautiful garden. Breakfast is served on the bottom floor, not air-conditioned and stuffy. It must have once served as a cellar of sorts. Here, too, don't make the mistake of breaking rules; unfortunately we sat at a table not assigned to us and I got a good reprimanding by the lady who was put in charge of the seating arrangements,in front of the other guests. Quite embarrassing, really. Good spot for enjoying a quite sanctuary, and a cup of good coffee and Apfelstrudel. The human touch is not their forte though.

I foolishly showed up in Jerusalem at Christmas time with no lodging reserved. Everyplace was mostly booked, so I wound up having to switch among FIVE different places over the course of 10 days. That gave me the chance to see most of the hostels in the city, and the Austrian Hospice was by far the best. Most of the others were dirty and overcrowded, while the Austrian dorm rooms were spotless, well-maintained, and came with an enormous breakfast spread for the same price. Also its location near the Damascus Gate is unbeatable and the building itself is basically a tourist sight in its own right. The only downside is that the staff is not very friendly, but maybe that's just the price you pay for the Germanic efficiency. I liked the Austrian Hospice enough that I've always stayed here on subsequent visits, too.
