I was just at the DC Hotel for 5 nights last week with my wife and 2 children (13 and 15). Not sure what hotel some of these other people stayed at...as this was a great experience. We had a "family room," so there was a king bed with 2 love seats that opened up as beds for the children. The room was surprisingly spacious, with a half wall separating the sleeping area from the love seats with beds. The rooms were modern and frankly much bigger than a typical room with 2x double beds that you would see here in the U.S. A family room really saves money but note that family rooms face the "new city'" not the "Old City."
The service was outstanding. It got to be a joke with us. Everytime we called about something...need an iron...need a transformer,,,need a hairdryer (there was one in the room but we didn't see it) a person appeared at our door in 2 minutes. We did experience a clogged shower drain, which was fixed just as quick.
Breakfasts were very good. Remember you are not in the USA, so things were a little different. Note that on Shabat (Saturday) the kitchen is basically closed so breakfast is much more limited, but this is Israel you know.
Location was the best. You go out cross the street cut through the Mamilla mall (outside mall below grade) walk 10 minutes and you are at the Jaffe Gate. Best location there is for a top hotel in Jerusalem.
The hotel itself is made of Jerusalem stone and I would describe it as simple elegance. we visited the King David for drinks, so I can't comment on the rooms. The common areas seemed a little "tired" to me and I usually like older properties. I would say this: We had drinks on the outside terrace and once the staff knew we were not guests the level of service dropped big time. The place felt stuffy to me.
Don't let the critics sway you. This is a great property (not cheap to be sure) in a great location. Yes, it can get busy like any other, but you won't be sorry staying here.
