“Fabulous hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

Very very nice hotel! We spent few days there. You can walk to the old city. Room are kind of small, well not so big, but service is great, breakfast buffet is unbelievable and great pool. Another big hotel is in construction now which will give competition to the king david, but the king david will stay different because of all its history. It has an old style but very nice, especially for being in Jerusalem, a city which so much history.

So much history, great location, amazing pool, family friendly. Downside? Doors between suite and living area made of glass. So useless if you want to have lights on while the little one sleeps! Food was ok - but not as good as i expected from such an establishment. So four stars... Maybe it deserved 5 - but my expectations were high going in and were just not met.

The King David has been a center of life, politics and intrigue in Jerusalem for decades. It has a magnifecent location with a splendid view of the Old City. World leaders are regulars here but it is also a great hotel for a vacation in the Holy Land. The pool is a great place to rest after a busy day of touring Or shopping. The restaurants are pricey--you can do better for dinner in town but the breakfast buffet is great.

I've stayed here several times and continue to like the property. Dining room staff really make you feel at home here. Newly renovated rooms on the 6th floor are very nice but each room is different even though they charge the same rates in a category; room 643 on the corner is really nice and costs the same as room 642 which is a fraction of its size and value. Food is excellent; gym is OK but nothing like the Mamila and Citadel down the street. They have two massage rooms with excellent therapists but could use a real spa considering the size and prestige of the hotel. Pool area is very good with a wading pool for the kids. There are no electrical outlets in the bathrooms on this newly renovated 6th floor and no dual voltage outlets so bring your adapter. Amazing how stupid the renovator was to leave this out and a perfect example of how things operate when you really don't have competition. Here you get a concierge who knows his stuff, a rarity in Israeli hotels. Be sure and ask for connecting rooms if you need them -- adjoining doesn't mean connecting here. The E-Dan discount doesn't apply to all food and beverage outlets in the hotel, such as the pool area. This is a hotel which will benefit from the coming competition by the Waldorf Astoria. Reservation department is more apt to say no than yes, especially at Dan Hotels central reservations, and don't expect that anything you put into the reservation record will be there unless you call the hotel directly. Hotel forces you to take a second room if you have any kids along with two parents and in a suite they also charge heftily for the kids making a club suite nonsensical; so this hotel can be very expensive for families with kids. We had a family suite in the Mamila Hotel for half the price. There a few family suites at this hotel but they were sold out when we were to be there. Also, meals in the dining room are outrageously expensive for kids so we just gave them room service for dinner and ate at the pool for lunches (very good, by the way) and skipped the buffets. Doesn't make sense to pay $100 a kid to bring them to lunch for them to eat pasta and jello. Over Passover it got difficult to find food for the kids in the hotel as the menus were limited but otherwise it's fine and within 2 hours of Passover ending, there was fresh bread and cakes in the coffee shop (pretty impressive!). When you exit the hotel, you will pay more for taxis because the ones that are there are pre-screened and waiting around for you so they want to be paid for that, but at least you know you are getting into a good taxi. Nevertheless, if you want the gardens and the grandest experience in Israel along with the old city wall view from your room all in one, you can't beat the King David.

Good stuff -
Oozes history and elegance. Superb location. amazing breakfast. Outstanding service. Excellent swimming pool. Very comfortable beds.
Average stuff -
Average room sizes although quite adequate
Poor stuff-
No free wifi access. Pathetic for a hotel of this class. However cross the road to the YMCA balcony for free access

Room Tip: delux - front or back ok

Jerusalem is a magic city in many ways but the hotels do not meet the highest standards yet. In that respect, King David is a luxury palace with a flavour of the 60-70's. The design is a bit dated, the staff is not always putting attention to details but we shall forgive these as the overall context is definetely charming. The pool and the garden offer peace and calm that one appreciates when returning from the city. The location and the view to the Old City are perfect. The room was very comfortable.

This hotel is a special one. While the rooms are not the most luxurious I've experienced (and certainly not the largest), they are lovely and elegant and clean. The staff is wonderful and the concierges friendly and helpful. And the breakfast is something I'm still thinking about a week after the fact. Beyond that, though, spending the night in such a historic place is magical. Even if you don't stay here, have a cocktail on the veranda and soak in the gorgeous Old City views.
