“My favorite coffee in Jerusalem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

I enjoy the coffee taste of Aroma, it is so tasty. I recommend salads at aroma, i personally like the Halomi salad, as for sandwiches i always order the smoked salmon. I like the atmosphere of aroma, it is lively and customer friendly. I never passed by Aroma without having coffee.

“"Bean" There, Done That”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

Background: Aroma is a large espresso chain in Israel with at least 123 branches nationwide, stretching from Tel Aviv to Haifa, Beer Sheva to Dead Sea, Tiberias to Nazareth, and dozens in Jerusalem. It is veritably the "Starbucks" of Israel, but that is where the comparison ends. But, whereas Starbucks offered little to distinguish itself from the local competition other than higher prices and fewer food choices, Café Aroma has elevated local palates from the humble nes al chalav (instant coffee) to high-brow gourmet (espresso). Politics and religion aside, the fact that there is currently no Starbucks anywhere in Israel is a testament to Aroma's success. (Aroma has even expanded to the US, Canada and Europe.)

Its location is a big plus. They are just as ubiquitous as Starbucks; this one is in the German Colony neighbourhood. As its name implies, it is best known for its excellent, slow-roasted javas. The roasting process is done by hand in the slow traditional way, a method which allows the coffee beans to achieve perfect body, softness, acidity and presence. Of their drinks, I especially love their Mocha, a long shot of custom-blended espresso, milk chocolate Aroma pralines, topped with steamed milk and froth, then sprinkled with cocoa powder. They can also brew a mean cup of Turkish coffee. In the summer, the Ice Aroma, a special blend of double-brewed Arabica coffee, cocoa Pralines, milk and sugar, mixed in crushed ice is a cool treat to beat the heat. Unique to Aroma is they place a small complimentary bar of dark chocolate beside every cup. The menu expands to fresh and healthy foods as well, from savoury Bureka pastries to salads to the hearty Aroma Power Breakfast. The atmosphere is part-French bistro, part-Italian café and part-Israeli kibbutz. Ranging from £7 to £20 for a meal, drink and tax, their prices are by no means cheap but is reasonable compared to other cafes in the area.

I'm hard pressed to cite any negatives about this place. Well, for one, the pace is brisk and crowded, but less hectic than other cafes. Some branches are self-serve, SROs joints. Maybe more Robusta beans for us java-holics.

Verdict: What more can you ask? From great coffee, fresh and healthy food, extensive menu, reasonable prices, warm atmosphere, contemporary décor, free WiFi and newspapers, and friendly service, Aroma delivers. Recommended. Grade A-minus.
