When we got our first room the beds were broken and the toilet smelled like swamp gas.
They changed our room for us and the toilet broke that night. A man came to look at the toilet and said he would be back to fix it, needed a new part, the water control system.
Too bad there wasn't a Home Depot in Israel or I would have gotten the part myself. I say this because the guy never came back to fix the commode. I notified the front desk repeatedly regarding this and nothing was done. It was busted for 4 days and 3 days prior to the Sabbath. They did offer another room the day before we left, but at that point we just put up with busted Toilet. What I find disturbing is the great waste of water.
There was a dead fly on a step, in the stair well the entire length of our stay. We greeted it daily, but it never did move. The staff was minimally helpful, ambivalent. and did not offer to find out information on bus schedules. The good thing was that the desk receptionist did help us set up a tour. Of course she did not tell us the cab had come to pick us up. Most of the front desk staff were younger, students, who while pleasant, were not particularly attentive. The breakfast was good, cold items with juice and instant coffee and tea. The Hotel is in a very good convenient location--not far from the bus lines which get you to all the major landmarks. Oh yes, I almost forgot to mention that there are no telephones in the room, but there is free Wi-Fi. We had to pay at the beginning, I guess they were afraid we would leave after finding out about the conditions.
We are from the USA. There are many fine small motels and hotels in the USA, in addition to the major chains. In Israel there does not seem to be a good rating system.
If you want a "cheap hotel" in the USA, you can find many that have basic ratings where you know, for the most part, what you are getting. In Israel the level of Hotel may or may not be related to the cost. Do your research, and use multiple sites to check your Hotel out.
