“A little gem in the old city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

An Israeli friend of mine recommended this hostel to me and said it was "absolutely wonderful". He wasn't lying. Location, location, location. Perfect. Close to everything in the old city and being next to the Jaffa gate (with tour starts, banks, restaurants, info) means that newer parts of W-Jerusalem can also easily be reached on foot or by tram. The roof is awesome. Just go upstairs and have a look.

Staff is super friendly and flexible and will advise you on pretty much anything, wether it being places to eat, bank services, holidays (August/September is filled with them and some places close down earlier or close completely), tours, buses and sights. They will also have change for the coffee machine, do your washing for 50 NIS and tell a few stories and jokes. ;)

The rooms are fine. And just great for this price. All in all I stayed in 3 private rooms w. ensuite bathroom and shared bathrooms and everything worked out fine. Everything was clean and tidy. There was no air-con in the rooms, only fans, but it didn't matter (I imagine it could be a problem for some in july/august though).

The only thing I missed was not having mobile and internet connection at the same time (since the wif-fi only works in and around the cave-like lobby where you lose gsm signal). It might work if you step outside though. But, this was a minor thing really. Another thing.... there can be many steps to your room... and no lift. This however was no problem in my case.

I was travelling alone and the Citadel was just perfect for me. I highly recommend it. :)

Pros: location is fantastic, in the center of the old city, the interior is filled with cavernous stone archways,

Cons: room was crammed with a too-large bed, leaving little room to set down your bags and move around. The bathrooms are not great, but they are reasonable. Hand-held showerheads tend to make the entire bathroom and everything in it (including toilet paper) wet, so be careful! There was a bad smell in our room, probably from ventilation from the bathrooms, which was reduced once we closed our window. But closing the window meant no cool air from outside. The location of the kitchen in the center of all the accommodation rooms meant that observers of Ramadan could be heard having their pre-dawn meal throughout the hostel.

Honestly, the old city is a short 10 minute walk from the Zion Square neighborhood, and we would recommend staying there.

I was really excited to stay at Citadel because it looked so charming. While it was certainly characterful, this was the only real selling point. Our room was cramped and airless - no air-con or window meant it was too hot and I found it very difficult to sleep. The bathroom facilities were terrible - we had to walk through reception and upstairs to use a toilet or shower. Everything was broken or run-down - the tap fell off, the toilet-seat fell off, the showers were hand-held and weak. We wouldn't have minded this if the place was fun but it was strangely quiet. The guests all sat separately and silently reading in the communal areas. The staff were friendly and helpful though. Citadel was very disappointing and we ended up moving to another hostel.
Also, whilst it's great to be in Old City for day-time sight-seeing, everything shuts up in the evening and we found it's actually better to be situated in the New Town area.

Good location, in the middle of old city. Rooftop view is OK (other hostels have better views though). They have dorm rooms, private rooms and rooftop mattresses. Rooftop is very windy and noisy. Dorm rooms are a joke. No AC, hardly any ventilation. Smells real bad. Hardy any cleaning. The worst part is the condition of bathrooms. My friend stated: "They don't clean these as the dirt holds the plumbing together". I agree ... All rooms are very noisy mainly because of the staff!!! For some reasons unknown by me they make it a habit to shout out loud very long and boring stories even after midnight. Not a good value for money at all. Many better options nearby. (No wonder they always have vacancies.

Room Tip: Avoid ground floor room at all expense and prepare to go to a public bath .... Even better: go somep...
