great site, well-marked, friendly staff, phenomenal geography! entrance is expensive though. though the weather was cold and windy we spent almost 3 hours walking and driving, and wished we had the fortitude for more.

“Great place to explore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

Very impressive. Nice thing that you can get everywhere by car and select to travel by foot based on your interests and level of fitness. Allow at least 3 hours to see everything (this in case you almost don't take any trails by foot)

“European? No need to book a trip to America....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

America is famous for it's amazing Desert National Parks. But when living in Europe you can book a much cheaper holiday - to Eilat, Israel, and then, either by rented car or part of a tour, visit Timna. It's equally stunning... Timna is an half hrs. drive from Eilat on the Hwy 90, cheap to enter and you can very well spend a whole day there enjoying it's natural wonders. First of all of course the oldest copper mines in the world (think 4000 BC) in a glaring white landscape. Then the huge, red Mushroom (and-a-half), the ocre Pillars of Solomon (think the Olgas in Australia's Outback) and much, much more. The landscape changes at every corner. At the far end a simple restaurant with a shop that sells lovely arty stuff, not the common or garden souvenirs. The restaurant sits on the border of an artificial lake, so you think yourself in an oasis. A wonderful day out. On your own you can wander about to your heart's content, in a tour they'll explain everything about the amazing mining of copper. Don't leave Eilat without going here!

“Impressive desolation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

Take a stretch of bone-dry rocky and pebbly soil, several days’ travel away from the nearest nowhere. At summer temperatures well into the forties (Celcius), you dig a hole in the ground. By hand, of course. Keep on digging and your hole develops into a shaft. You climb down your shaft and start branching out horizontally. From those branches you take the lumps of copper you find and sell them. If you can find a market somewhere, that is. Would you do this for a living? Now, 21st century? Well, people did once, at about the time the pyramids were built.

These mines in Timna Park are the oldest shaft-dug mines in the world. Apart from the mines, the park also has desolate landscapes and weirdly beautiful rock formations. Access roads are good, there are parking places and walking paths (bring sturdy shoes). As a contrast, the park also has an artificial lake with pedalos and a restaurant.

To go there, just rent a car in Eilat (several well-known rental companies are located near Eilat airport’s arrival hall) and drive north along Hwy 90 for some 30 kilometres. And that car will come in handy if you want to visit the Red Canyon as well.
