“NO PROFESSIONAL STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2011

Though the stuff was friendly and kind, still the general administration and management of the hotel is very poor! Breakfast was basic! On the first day there was some fresh milk but soon proved that it wasn't fresh at all. After the children had pour the milk into corn-flakes bowl it all turned bad. Then the next day milk was not fresh! why? Because it was a sweet concentrated canned milk!! If you are a meat lover don't have a dinner at the hotel. Though the menu was a buffet it was full of salats and other dishes and simultaneously there was only one dish with beef! No other meat and you would be very lucky to have some if you could arive before 7.45pm. The first night we sat around 7.30pm, the noodles run out becaue there was one goup that ate before as. We asked some noodles for our children because they couldn't eat something else and the funny answer we got was "sorry we don't have any other noodles, they are finished already". As a group leader I instructed the reception to ring all the group at 6.00pm but unfortunately half of the group remained in bed because of no wake-up call! The stuff working are totally unprofesional and very slow to respond to your need! I'm sure there are much more better hotels to choose from, if you are planning to stay to the area of Bethlehem.

Standards of accommodation at the Sancta Maria are broadly comparable to what you would get at a basic chain motel: a bed, a bathroom and that's pretty much it. It's not tremendously well located; many Bethlehem residents seem not to have heard of Dr Jeminar (or Geimnar) Street, though in fact getting there is easy enough--from the Nissan Brothers' establishment on Manger Street, a local landmark, take the road going sharply downhill and you'll find the Sancta Maria at the bottom. You're more or less equidistant from the Church of the Nativity and the Bethlehem crossing-point into Israel proper; each is walkable in about twenty-five minutes, though you'll be climbing a steep hill in either case.

Rooms are plainly and simply furnished, though the bathrooms are unusually large for an establishment of this kind. There isn't any in-room temperature control; in the wintertime an electric oil-filled radiator will be wheeled into your room. (This works surprisingly well, though it takes about an hour to heat the place up.) In the summertime, I imagine, cooling is achieved by opening the French windows to the balcony. If you're travelling with small children, this might be a consideration.

The bottom line, then, is that there's nothing memorable about the Sancta Maria--good or bad. If you're looking for a place to sleep, and nothing more, it'll fit the bill.

The lobby of the hotel is extremely well-appointed and comfortable, and the location of the establishment itself is excellent. It is within walking distance of the main attractions of Bethlehem, if you don't mind walking uphill. Staff are very friendly and thoughtful. A downside is the breakfast, which, although it has choice, is poor quality. If you can, ask for a room on the 3rd floor at the rear of the hotel. This will ensure a night undisturbed by traffic and a fantastic view of the Herodion and the valley below Bethlehem. Make sure you visit the Shepherds Tent restaurant in Beit Sahour, and also Casa Nova in tehe town next to the Church of the Nativity for a coffee or drink.

My mother (71 years) and I were booked into this hotel, as part of an 18-person group tour to the Holy Land. We spent 4 nights here. The hotel from the lobby to the rooms were very clean. The meals (breakfast and dinner) were delicious (good selection at breakfast) and always served hot. The hotel appears to be a favourite with large group tours. Large groups from Italy and Kenya were also there during our stay.

Our room was spacious and so was the bathroom/toilet. Towels and sheets were changed daily. The beds were comfortable. Strangely only our room did not have a TV - but then we did not miss it as we were out touring all day and were not all interested in the 'idiot box' at night.

Only missed not having an internet connection just to check mail (but again this did not bother us too much). There was a little supermarket about 2 minutes walk uphill and it sold some delicious local chocolates and local sweetmeats.

The hotel is approx. 3 minutes by coach to the old city and the Church of the Nativity (which incidentally could be seen from the windows of some rooms but not ours!).

Would definitely consider staying at Sancta Maria Hotel, if we ever visit Bethlehem again.

Promise to post photos of this hotel soon!
