“a wonderful small hotel”

Hotel Bella

May 2, 2008

Had we done nothing in Turkey but stay at The Hotel Bella our trip would have been worthwhile. Wonderfully situated with a view of the citadel and St. John’s basilica, up the hill from the pleasant town of Selcuk, the hotel offers hospitality and opportunities for relaxing far beyond its price. The rooftop terrace, and particularly the adjacent open-air great room lined with Turkish couches and small tables, with a fireplace if the chill requires, provide a special place for meals as well as to read, write postcards, watch the storks, or converse with other guests about their travels and discoveries. Erdal and Nazmi, as well as the others there, are generous with advice and assistance, accounts of their own experiences, and offers of tea or snacks.
Although the hotel is an easy walk to the bus station or the car rentals in Selcuk, for those who don’t want to walk there, or as far as Ephesus, they offer free transportation. They also arrange small group tours to Priene, Miletus and Didyma, a boon to those without a car. And if you want gozleme or borek they’ll tell you where to get them. It is hard to convey how much at home we felt there in this small hotel in this small town, near so many remarkable historic sites. But perhaps the fact that we are doing this posting, conveys something of the value our four-night stay there gave to our week in Turkey. EG/BK -- USA

“Clean, Friendly, Great Value”

Hotel Bella

Apr 30, 2008

We chose Hotel Bella based on previous reviews submitted here. The decision was vindicated by the cleanliness of the rooms, the friendliness of the staff (all of them) and certainly the price (£25-£30 per night for an air-conditioned room including breakfast). The roof terrace is a real bonus offering great views of the fortress, across the town plus the resident stork on the telegraph pole across the street - an excellent place to have breakfast and dinner (which was again excellent value at £6 per person for the 4 course set meal !). We've stayed in hotels across the world charging 5-10 times as much as Hotel Bella and some were not even as good!). So, all in all, I'd definitely recommend the Hotel Bella to anyone who wants to see Ephesos, Sirence etc but I'd pay the extra £4 per night for the bigger room - room 103 was small, room 203 was great).

“We liked it”

Hotel Bella

It's a fine place to stay in Selcuk. The rooftop terrace has an amazing view and wonderful setting, the breakfast and Turkish coffee was good enough, the price was right. I'd suggest asking for one of the rooms with a balcony; they're bigger than the ones without, which are quite small, and you get to sit outside. And, they didn't push the carpets. If you wanted to look at them, they were happy to show them to you...

“Great Choice!”

This is the place to stay in Selcuk! Comfortable rooms, air conditioner plus great window ventilation when it was cool enough. Bathroom is a tight squeeze, we had to choreograph our movements to fit. The corner rooms are a bit noisy, but earplugs are an easy fix.

The food is wonderful and the dinner fixed menu is a bargain at 17 YTL a person. We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious breakfasts and the super service...not to mention the view of Selcuk and the stork nests.

The staff constantly offered different options for activities and we were grateful for loans of guidebooks for Ephesus and Priene, Miletus, and Didyma.

Although many guests buy rugs in the Hotel-owned carpet shop, we did not purchase from them. I was concerned by moths crawling on the rugs.

All in all, Hotel Bella was so lovely that we decided to stay an extra night. The staff was accommodating and helped us cancel our hotel in Izmir and work out details with our driver. We will definitely keep this on future itineraries.

This hotel was charming and full of character, though the room was so small we could barely walk around our luggage to get in bed. The bathroom had no ventilation system and thus had that wet feeling after we showered. The breakfast was served to us but we weren’t given a choice of what we wanted to eat, so we each got a plate of fruit and a dish of eggs. However, the rooftop terrace is a lovely place to eat, overlooking the city. Location is great – right across from St. John’s Basilica. The owner was a little gruff with us a few times, once over a misunderstanding about how many nights we were staying (I had confirmed with him two weeks before we arrived via email that it was going to be just one night instead of 2, but he seemed to have forgotten this and therefore acted very disgruntled about it when we went to pay), and once when I tried to pay with a credit card and he asked for cash. When I gave him cash, he said one of my bills was counterfeit. Upon my explaining that I had just taken the money from the ATM he himself had directed us to, he re-inspected the bill and decided it was real after all. Not super friendly. The hotel’s free shuttle service to and from Ephesus is nice and convenient. Although the owner led us inside the hotel’s “adjoining carpet shop” to show us the map of Ephesus, he only asked us once if we wanted to buy any carpet and when we said no, didn’t push it. He also let us borrow his guidebook to Ephesus.
