Had we done nothing in Turkey but stay at The Hotel Bella our trip would have been worthwhile. Wonderfully situated with a view of the citadel and St. John’s basilica, up the hill from the pleasant town of Selcuk, the hotel offers hospitality and opportunities for relaxing far beyond its price. The rooftop terrace, and particularly the adjacent open-air great room lined with Turkish couches and small tables, with a fireplace if the chill requires, provide a special place for meals as well as to read, write postcards, watch the storks, or converse with other guests about their travels and discoveries. Erdal and Nazmi, as well as the others there, are generous with advice and assistance, accounts of their own experiences, and offers of tea or snacks.
Although the hotel is an easy walk to the bus station or the car rentals in Selcuk, for those who don’t want to walk there, or as far as Ephesus, they offer free transportation. They also arrange small group tours to Priene, Miletus and Didyma, a boon to those without a car. And if you want gozleme or borek they’ll tell you where to get them. It is hard to convey how much at home we felt there in this small hotel in this small town, near so many remarkable historic sites. But perhaps the fact that we are doing this posting, conveys something of the value our four-night stay there gave to our week in Turkey. EG/BK -- USA
