“More significant for the devout”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

If you are a devout believer in the Virgin Mary this place certainly is significant, but for the rest it is mostly a curiosity and one where the veracity as to whether this was truly the last home of Mary is subject to considerable question. Still, it is a popular stop, but there isn't that much to see except a small stone house/shrine, the holy water spring and a prayer wall.

“Not worth the time unless for religious reasons.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

Virgin Mary was believed to have lived near Ephesus in this house. However the authenticity is contentious because of lack of scientific evidence. Though the Roman Catholic Church has never officially accepted this house, it has received papal visits including most recently by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006.

The structure itself has been lovingly restored and is very small (we don't expect Virgin Mary to live in a big mansion) so visitors are required to move along in a line and are not expected to linger. This can be frustrating for anyone who made the long journey up the hill (no public transport), pay a relatively high entrance fee, queue in a long line & be hurried out of the door.

There is a photograph of Anne Catherine Emmerich, a German nun who had a series of visions. Her visions were then published in a book. A French priest relied on the information found in this book and searched around Ephesus. That was how the House of Virgin Mary was discovered.

It is a Catholic and Muslim shrine as the holy Quran mentioned Mary as the mother of Jesus. So unless it is a religious trip, I would recommend skipping this site and just do Ephesus.

Interesting place worth a visit, even better if you are very religious, there`s a prayer wall to leave messages & lovely gardens to enjoy.

“Fleeced By The Church!!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

So let's get this straight. A German nun has a few dreams about the Virgin Mary. The Catholic Church send someone to Ephesus to look for the house she described. They find this place, only to be told it is a 6th century house. "Is there an outside chance it could be 1st Century?" the Church asks. Unlikely but it can't be ruled out, comes the reply.
So here we are. 25 lira to park. 25 lira to see a fine example of a 6th Century (yes that's 6th Century) Byzantine House, 2 lira for a candle and one lira for a piece of ribbon to tie to the prayer tree. Holy water is free, but bottles to put it in cost 5 lira.
Cynical? me?
To be fair, there is a vague, outside possibility that Mary lived somewhere in this region in her latter years. The Apostle John lived nearby and it is believed he looked after her.
There is no evidence that she was here. Not that it stops nuns and the faithful from sobbing and praying.
