When you read all the reviews about this hotel, you wonder what can possibly make it so special. But it really is! Yes, it is scrupulously clean; it is central to all the main sites so that they are within very easy walking distance; it is tastefully decorated and equipped to modern standards; our room was lovely and, after all the miles that we walked, the ‘Jacuzzi’ bath was just wonderful! Yes, the food is excellent - breakfasts started with real, fresh orange juice and there was an array of different dishes to choose from; in the restaurants attached to the hotel, the menus were good, quality of the service and cuisine high. With the 10% discount card that you were given both for the hotel and nearby restaurants in the chain, they represented very good value.
No, what made this hotel special were the people! Prior to the visit, they had dealt very efficiently with my queries and requests. When we were there, nothing was ever too much trouble; their patience and courtesy were limitless. In all the hassle of Istanbul streets where everyone wants to sell you a carpet or a tour or some sort of souvenir, the hotel was an oasis of calm, tucked away just off the main tram route. Complimentary is a word you hear very often in the hotel – excellent wi-fi, bottles of water, Turkish delight, tea and snacks from 4:30 pm. But the hotel also offers a range of activities on different days of the week; you might not feel like taking part, but we made the effort and were very glad that we did. There was a cooking class on Turkish cuisine, which was a lot of fun and we got to eat the food afterwards; there was a cheese and wine tasting and best of all, a four hour guided tour of a Farmers Market and a delightful part of Istanbul on that we would never otherwise have seen. This was led by the charming and highly professional manager, Mr Agah, a man dedicated to looking after his guests. We also made some good friends through these shared experiences. We have never been to a hotel where we were made to feel so special – a gift when we left and half the staff turning out to wave goodbye – and I can't believe they only did that for us…..!
And Istanbul? A fascinating and romantic city that has so much to see and do.
