“affordable boutique hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2014

I stayed for 4 nights and i enjoyed every bit of it! I like the rooms and I was given a deluxe room, quite huge than i expected. I had the view of Sultanahmet mosque from my room and on the rooftop you can see the marmara sea.

However, there is not enough staff to help you with your luggage when you check-in. you have to carry your bags all the way to your room and climb on a narrow and steep stair,

GOOD HOSTEL, AN ACCEPTABLE BUDGET B&B AND DEFINITELY NOT A HOTEL!!!

Where do I start. I spent a week with my husband. The hotel was booked using my airmails with a reputable airline and I assumed I am getting a decent HOTEL.
This is not a HOTEL. The description here is hugely misleading and is not the truth. There is no restaurant/bar!!! There is what looks like works canteen where you get a breakfast. The tables are covered with glass so that tablecloths do not need to be washed at all. Despite that the cloths looked like they were chewed by a dog - never seen an iron! The chairs old and the whole room looked poor. The place is also for fit and those that do not mind climbing the stairs in darkness. The staircase is narrow and dark, the lights installed are movement sensors based and positioned to reduce the number of lights. As a result when you are coming down the stairs you are in darkness - I slipped twice having missed a step which I could not see.

The carpet has not been washed since it was put down - in places it looked grey or blackish. The "hotel" is manned by a male who I suppose is meant to be a manager/receptionist. The men sit their whole shift, only leaving the desk to smoke by the door. They never leave the desk to check the place, check the customers etc. On day three we left the room for breakfast to find water standing on the carpet. We told the "manager" who , looking completely, uninterested nodded. At lunchtime the area in front of our room looked like a building site. A quick botched job and by 5pm they were gone LEAVING the BAGS WITH RUBBISH BEHIND. THOSE BAGS WITH RUBBISH WERE LEFT STANDING THERE AND ARE PROBABLY STILL THERE OUTSIDE THE ROOM., THE FLOR WAS NEVER CLEANED AFTER THAT AND LEFT COVERED WITH CONCRETE ETC.

Cleanliness - WE STAYED THRE FOR A WEEK AND NOT ONCE WAS THE BEDLINEN CHANGED!!!! WE put towels on the floor to have them changed and they were put back! Next morning we led them in the wet shower - they were finally changed. The room WAN NOT CLEANED ONCE DURING THAT WEEK - from sink, tap, bathroom shelf, floor.

BLACK DAMP PATCHES ON THE WALLS NEXT TO OUR ROOM.

PROMISED WI-FI UNUSABLE AT TIME.

THE ROOM SO TINY ONE COULD NOT SIT THERE AND SINCE THERE IS NO LOUNGE THAT LEAVES THE CUSTOMERS FORCED TO STAY OUTSIDE ECEN IN RAIN.

My wife and I stayed in this hotel for 11 nights. I think that says all! Having said that, we enjoyed every second there, the staffs are friendly and will help you with anything you need. Breakfast is superb. The hotel is close to most attractions such as Sultan Ahmed Camii aka Blue mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi palace, plus the tram. When we go back to Istanbul, we'll definitely stay there again!

Highly recommended and value for money!

It was a dreamlike experience to stay in Asmali. Located in Sultanahmet, near all big historical sites, makes it special at first. Outside it looks beautiful, with wooden walls and pink flowers on windows. Hosts are so pleasant, and helped us with any questions asked. We had room with french bed, all was decorated in old-stylish style. Breakfast was good, there was big variety of salads, cheeses, pies, and sweets. Also, coffee and tea were always avaliable to drink in the kitchen, and in room too. I love Asmali experience.

The hotel is very well located, next to all tourist sites in that area of the town. Because we booked for 5 nights we benefited from free pick-up from the airport.
The terrace has a view both towards the Blue Mosque and the sea. The hotel does not have a restaurant (only breakfast is prepared) but a coffee and a tea machine are at guests' disposal full-time on the terrace. There are many restaurants around, so from our point of view this was not a problem at all.
The rooms are cozy and comfortable, cleaned every day, although you can see a broken knob or scratched furniture here and there. The bathroom was OK in terms of dimensions and facilities, but there is a serious problem with the ventilation: there's a constant smell of humid old pipes and the ventilation system they have in place is not enough to remove it.
The staff was helpful and offered information about the town and sites. Overall, we were happy with our stay there.

Room Tip: Choose a deluxe room.

The Asmali was a very good place to be located if you are looking to be a tourist. It is surrounded by lots of restuarants, and is a shot walk to most of the famous sites. And, as others have noted, the breakfast is really tasty, and the view from the rooftop is really, really great. We ended up getting baklava and watching the sunset every night, and it was perfect.

That said, if you're looking for a slightly less touristy experience, it might be better to stay somewhere else in the city. When we got there, we felt a bit like we were in Disneyland. That said, the hotel itself was lovely, well-priced, and had character. Plus, when they found out we were on our honeymoon, they gave us a free upgrade from a standard to a delux double! If you're not used to traveling in middle-income countries, this is probably a perfect place to be.

Room Tip: There are two street-view rooms with lots of windows. I forget the numbers - maybe 302 and 402? But...
