We stayed at the Blue Hills Hotel in the Old City section of Istanbul in April, 2007. We moved to the Blue Hills after spending 5 nights in the commercial district for business reasons, so that we could be closer to the tourist sights.
We were originally trying to arrange to stay at the Seven Hills Hotel, but were informed by their extremely hospitable manager, Bulent, that they were booked for the weekend. Bulent went out of his way to find us a room in one of their sister hotels -- and we ended up staying at the Blue Hills. He said we wouldn't be disappointed, but we were...
Okay, so the positives first. The location is perfect for exploring the nearby sights of the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofia, etc.
The windows were thick, and blocked out much of the street sounds (including the 5am call to prayer).
The wireless internet was amazing and fast -- however, the hotel does not have a computer that is just for guests. They do allow you to use the computer behind the reception area, but that is it.
The front desk staff is very nice and friendly and will make restaurant recommendations and reservations for you. The breakfast was your typical Turkish breakfast of tomatoes, cucumbers, bread, etc. AND finally, the price was low -- 109 euros per night.
However, the room was just okay. They do not have a top sheet, which is fine, but they only provide you with a sheet covered duvet. Since the bedspread had stains all over it, we never used it, and the accompanying decorative pillow cases were equally dirty. We asked for extra pillows on the first night, which were promised, but never delivered. The hot water in the shower never lasted longer than 5 minutes, and the major leaks in the tub caused flooding on the bathroom floor every morning. (A friend stayed in the room next door and didn't seem to have the same lack of hot water/leaking tub issues).
If you are looking for an inexpensive hotel that is basic, and a place to rest your head at night, in a great location, this is probably a good choice. Breakfast was good, and left out until 12pm for those who sleep in, and the staff was very nice. The other perk is that you can frequent the Seven Hills Hotel rooftop for breakfast if you feel like walking the 7-10 minutes away. The Seven Hills has one of the best rooftop views in the city. Also, Ben, from the Seven Hills, greeted us at the Blue Hills and walked us to dinner and showed us around upon arrival.
The hospitality of the staff made up for many of the problems, but also the lack of follow-through made us frustrated.
